Spiders’ Benefits to Humans

In Cambodia, a southeastern Asian nation, the locals consider cooked tarantula spiders to be a delicious dish. In addition, the Piaroa Indians of southern Venezuela are also known for taking spiders as a delicacy. But of course, before spiders are made into a dish and eaten by people, their highly irritant hairs, a spiders’ main defense system, has to be removed first.

According to studies, though spider venom (the poison produced by spiders) is deadly to most insects, a great majority of it is harmless to those animals with a backbone, including humans. Thus, some scientists are considering substituting spider venom for conventional pesticides because the latter is usually harmful to humans as well as pests. Australian funnel web spiders are thought to be a promising source. That’s because the venom in them can do great harm to most of the world’s insect pests. What’s more, Australian funnel web spiders can grow well in captivity and, most important of all, are easy to “milk.” Some scientists are also trying to engineer genes for the production of spider toxins into viruses, and then use the viruses to infect and kill specific pests such as cotton bollworms.

At the same time, other scientists are doing various experiments to look into the possible medical uses for spider venom, and their potential for treating some diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, strokes, and certain heart problems.
