In the recent years Bulgarian airports reported a steady growth of traffic, every year between 2001 and 2007 growth has been above 12%. Between 1999 and 2007, the number of passengers has tripled from just 2 million to over 6 million passengers in total for the three main airports - Sofia, Bourgas and Varna. This year though, things are a bit different: all three airports report impressive growth. According to anna.aero, Sofia Airport has recorded an increase in passengers of almost 14% in the first eight months of 2016. Ryanair opened its 83rd base at the airport in September. Given that, it seems likely that growth for 2016 as a whole is likely to be well above 15%. For the resort destinations of Bourgas and Varna year-to-date growth to September has been even more impressive at 23.3% and 21.0% respectively. All of this means that having handled a record of 7.5 million passengers in 2015, anna.aero predicts that total traffic across the three airports is likely to be in excess of 9 million in 2016.

Looking at monthly passenger numbers since the beginning of 2015 clearly shows the impressive growth last year across all three airports. It also reveals that while Sofia’s seasonality is relatively low, Bourgas and Varna have extremely seasonal operations. In fact, last winter Bourgas was closed for all of November and December, but this was to allow renovation of the taxiways and aprons.
Bourgas is so popular during the peak summer season that its monthly passenger numbers in June, July and August exceed those achieved at the airport serving the country’s capital. Both Bourgas and Varna are operated by Fraport Twin Star which celebrated the 10th anniversary of its partnership at the airports on 10 November 2016.
According to a recent Fraport press release*, the major tourism source markets driving the growth in 2016 include Russia, Germany, Poland and the UK. In addition, the two airports experienced a 7% increase in the number of airlines and a 16% gain in destinations in 2016. Both of these airports also welcome a significant number of charter flights that are not included in OAG schedule data.

The battle to be the leading airline in Sofia has become more intense with the arrival of Ryanair this year. Looking at schedule data for mid-September (after Ryanair made Sofia its 83rd base) shows that local carrier Bulgaria Air operates the most weekly departures, ahead of Wizz Air and Ryanair. However, in terms of seat capacity Wizz Air leads the way ahead of Bulgaria Air and Ryanair.
Ryanair announced in February 2017 its first Varna flights, with a new twice weekly service to Brussels Charleroi starting October, which will deliver over 35,000 customers p.a. at Varna Airport, Ryanair’s 3rd Bulgarian destination.
Ryanair also launched a new route from Plovdiv to Brussels Charleroi, with a twice weekly service beginning in October, as part of its winter 2017 schedule.

By a decision of the government mid 2016 the consortium "Gorna Oryahovitsa Civil Airport" received Gorna Oryahovitsa airport on a concession for a period of 35 years. 32 million BGN are planned for investments in the aerodrome for this period. Two popular low cost airlines and companies dealing with cargos will fly from the airport. Less than 10 km away two highways - "Hemus" and “Rousse - Veliko Tarnovo” join on a junction beside Polikraishte.
Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport was founded in 1925 and during socialism it developed freight and passenger flights in the country. It has an unique equipment, including a bad weather system. Lately it was mainly used as a basis of the famous flyer Gancho Daskalov's company for agricultural and training flights "Fortuna Air".
