PD1 It’s Not as Hard as You Think:Improvisation
for all
Date: Saturday, September 20th

Description: All are invited! This collaborative project between Nassau and Suffolk NYSCAME is open to all Long Island music teachers.
The day-long session will introduce you to the DeRosa Method of teaching improvisation for vocal and instrumental jazz. The techniques simplify musical concepts and generate positive, quick, fun and non-stressful results. DeRosa’s axiom is: Knowledge instills confidence, confidence replaces fear.
Note: There is an additional fee for this workshop.Teachers from Suffolk or Nassau PD participating districts will pay $10 and teachers from non-participating districts will pay $40.00. This workshop will offer 6 hours of in-service credit. Checks are payable toAmerican Jazz Venues.
Bio: Rich DeRosa is an internationally known musician, conductor and professor at the University of North Texas.

PD2 Teaching Percussion: Timpani and Bass Drum Tips, Techniques and Methods
Date: Wednesday, October 8th

Presented by: Stephen Payson and James Guarnieri
Description:This hands-on workshop/demonstration will include Timpani and Bass Drum rolls, strokes, articulations, and tuning methods. The session will also include snare drum technique, percussion philosophy and instrument maintenance. A must for all band directors!
Bio:Stephen Paysen and James Guarnieri are experienced teachers/band directors in the Northport-E. Northport Schools. Their collective expertise includes percussion, band and jazz ensemble work.
PD3Nail That Audition: Preparing Students to Succeed

Description: Four aspects of performance preparation will be addressed, including: “Know what to expect”, “Know what they want”, “Say something musically meaningful” and “You are what you believe”. Participants will explore and recognize behaviors associated with performance anxiety and learn techniques to assist students to convert nervous energy into a successful performance.
Bio:Donna Schwartz is a band director/teacher in the Syosset Public Schools. She an active blogger in the area of student performance and empowerment.
PD4 Secondary General Music: Think Out of the Box and Connect.

Description: This interdisciplinary approach to secondary music education shares multiple musical styles, relating them to historical events, actions of people, technological advancements, poetry, film and works of art. Common Core standards and interconnection of the arts with human experiences are all integrated into the approach.
Bio: David Kramer is a recently retired music teacher from the Miller Place School District. His areas of expertise include secondary general music and theater.
PD5 Improvisation Games will Improve your Group

Description:For all age levels and all ensembles, participants will learn how to incorporate improvisational games as transitions, warm-ups and focus activities to develop individual and group confidence and identity. In addition to musical results, effects include language acquisition, creativity, inspiration and student camaraderie.
Bio: Sarah Gill is the Director of Fine and Performing Arts in the Huntington School District.
PD6 Introduction to Smart Music and Finale

Bio: David Dolgon is an Adjunct Professor at Queens College and a highly experienced and in demand presenter on musical software products topics and techniques.

PD7Louis Armstrong: An American Icon
Date: Saturday, January 24th
Time: 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: Brentwood HS and The Louis Armstrong House Museum in Corona, Queens
Presented by: Dr. Joel Ratner
Description:Back by popular demand, the all-day event will explore the extraordinary musical and cultural contributions of Satchmo. The workshop will begin at Brentwood HS with a musical and video presentation highlighting Armstrong’s life and career. The discussion will continue on the bus as we travel to the Armstrong House Museum for a personal tour of the house that Louis and Lucille lived in for many years. Ideas and implications for classroom curriculum and presentation will be shared and discussed.
Note: There will be a $35 fee to cover the cost of bus transportation and the museum entrance fee (payable to NYSCAME Suffolk). This workshop will be open to the first 20 respondents. Participants will receive 6 hours of in-service credit.
Bio: Dr, Joel Ratner is the District Coordinator of Performing and Fine Arts for the Brentwood Schools and a certified Docent at the Louis Armstrong House Museum.
PD8Integrating Electronic Strings into the Orchestra
Date: Tuesday, January 27th

Location: The Long Island Violin Shop, Huntington NY
Presented by: David Wong
Description: The workshop will introduce and explore the
world of electric strings for school orchestras. Topics will include playing top 40 songs by ear, layering and looping tracks and much more. Participants are encouraged but not required to bring a traditional string instrument with them to participate in the workshop.
Bio: David Wong is an electronic string specialist from the LI Violin Shop. He is an accomplished musician and experienced workshop presenter with a passion for nurturing student interest in alternative musical styles.
PD9 Empowering Middle and High School Singers as Soloists and Music Readers
Date: Monday, February 9th

Presented by: Marc Greene
Description: Establish a culture of solo singing of classical, folk, and musical theatre literature found in the NYSSMA manual as part of your lesson and/or choral rehearsals. Connect the basics of solo vocal technique, interpretation and sight-reading skills to embellish your students’ choral experience. Sequential materials to build student independence and confidence will be distributed.
Bio: Marc Greene is an adjunct faculty member at Ithaca College with considerable past experience as a public school music teacher and administrator. Mr. Greene is Past President of NYSSMA.
