Lesson Notes: 1 Peter 1:6-7 (NIV based)
READ: 1 Peter 1:6-7, with vv.3-5 for context
v.6
From this verse, apparently "suffering grief in all kinds of trials" is a natural part and normal consequence of properly living a life of faith in Jesus Christ (v.2). And yet, "great rejoicing" is also mentioned in this verse. What connection can there be or should there be between great rejoicing and naturally suffering grief because of our faith? Of what benefit can "great rejoicing" be as we go through this suffering? Explore and explain.
Why do you suppose the phrase "for a little while" is used here to add a modifying description to our suffering of grief in all kinds of trials for our faith?
------
v.7
What is implied by the phrase "these have come so that"? What does this imply about God's role in regard to the trials and grief that come upon each of us personally who are properly living a life of faith in Jesus Christ?
What results are cited in this verse that ideally should come out of our suffering of grief in all kinds of trials for our faith? Examine each one and analyze why it is important.
Why is God so determined to test, "refine", and "prove" our faith?
Notice the "now" in regard to our present suffering of grief (v.6) and the "when" in regard to the future revealing of Jesus Christ (v.7). What assertion is being made here about the correlation between these two time distinctions?
"Praise, glory, and honor" to whom, and for what?
Is the overall purpose for all of this suffering of grief for our faith because God wants to incite from us more praise, glory, and honor for Himself? Or is there some other overall purpose?
- - Hint: What could impact us so drastically that it would motivate us to rejoice "GREATLY"? (v.6)
- - Another hint: See vv.3-6a and look for realities that would generate within us such great rejoicing on the day Jesus Christ is revealed that we are motivate to give praise, glory, and honor because we went through all of that suffering of grief during our life for our faith. Then, interconnect those realities you find in vv.3-6a to the principles that are in v.7.
- - A third hint: Take the principles cited in vv.6-7, directly insert them into the situation described in 1 Corinthians 3:11-15, and then extrapolate why some of us believers will be highly exhilarated with GREAT rejoicing, and giving praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed because we went through all of that suffering of grief during our life for our faith.
- - A fourth hint: See Matthew 5:11-12.
From the study of these truths in 1 Peter chapter 1 so far, what should your perspective be about you personally suffering of grief in all kinds of trials for your faith? Great distress? Extreme avoidance? Excruciating pain, like going to the dentist to get a root canal? Unexpected freak devastation (v.4:12)? Overwhelming dread? Or joy derived from this wisdom?
