Mr. Piet Cleveringa
1917 - 2013
Sadly I have to report the death of one of the founding fathers of AITA/IATA, Dutchman Piet Cleveringa. Piet must have been one of the last remaining survivors of the signing of the official documents establishing AITA/IATA at the City Hall in Brussels, Belgium in January 1952. An avid lover of amateur theatre (and of art in general) he served as Vice-President 1952 - 1963 and after that as President 1963 - 1971. The title of AITA/IATA Honorary President was bestowed on him after his Presidency ended.
Mr. Piet Cleveringa (Mr. is the title received after graduating law at a Dutch university) managed to get financial support from the Dutch government which made it possible to establish an office for the Secretary-General of AITA/IATA in the city of The Hague, on the premises of the Dutch Centre of the International Theatre Institute ITI, then directed by Max Wagener. Peter Schreiber was the Secretary-General in that office, which later moved to Amsterdam to be housed in the premises of the Theatre Museum.
Piet Cleveringa never lost his interest in the well-being of AITA/IATA and was present in 2002 at the World Children's Theatre Festival in Lingen, Germany. Also, he contributed an article in the celebratory volume that was published on the occasion of 50th Anniversary of AITA/IATA in 2002.
I remember so well visiting Piet in his apartment in The Hague and asking him to donate his documents etcetera to the AITA/IATA Archives that I had just initiated. I was sitting on the floor in his living room, surrounded by posters, programmes, papers, paraphernalia... and we talked for hours. He did indeed donate all documents to the archives and I left his apartment loaded like a bag-lady. It was a pleasure to catalogue all the papers, programmes, documents and insert them into the archives. They brought to life a part of the history of AITA/IATA.
After studying law, Piet Cleveringa wanted to become mayor. In The Netherlands, mayors are appointed by the King and candidates had (in that time) to be married and belong to a political party. Both conditions Piet could not meet. Instead, he worked at the Ministry of the Interior until his retirement.
Piet was an art lover, focusing on modern art paintings. Over the years he assembled a large, important collection and organised many exhibitions, together with his partner Ad. After Ad passed away in 1986 Piet donated his art collection to the State.
Mr. Piet Cleveringa will be remembered as one of the leading figures in the history of AITA/IATA.

Lamentablemente tengo que informar de la muerte de uno de los padres fundadores de AITA / IATA, el holandés Piet Cleveringa. Piet debe haber sido uno de los últimos supervivientes de la firma de los documentos oficiales que crearon AITA / IATA en el Ayuntamiento de Bruselas, Bélgica, en enero de 1952. Un ávido amante del teatro amateur (y del arte en general) se desempeñó como Vicepresidente 1952 - 1963 y después como Presidente de 1963 - 1971. El título de Presidente de Honor de AITA / IATA fue otorgado a él después que acabó su presidencia.
Sr. Piet Cleveringa (Sr. es el título recibido después de graduarse en Derecho en una universidad holandesa) logró obtener el apoyo financiero del gobierno holandés que hizo posible el establecimiento de una oficina para el Secretario General de AITA / IATA en la ciudad de La Haya, en las instalaciones del Centro holandés del Instituto Internacional de Teatro ITI, entonces dirigido por Max Wagener. Peter Schreiber fue el Secretario General en esa oficina, que más tarde se trasladó a Amsterdam para ser alojada en las instalaciones del Museo del Teatro.
Piet Cleveringa nunca perdió su interés en el bienestar de AITA / IATA y estuvo presente en 2002 en el Festival Mundial de Teatro para la Infancia en Lingen, Alemania. Asimismo, contribuyó con un artículo en el volumen de celebración que fue publicado con motivo del 50 Aniversario de AITA / IATA en 2002.
Recuerdo muy bien visitando Piet en su apartamento en La Haya y pidiéndole donar sus documentos etc a los Archivos de AITA / IATA que acababa de iniciarse. Yo estaba sentado en el suelo en su sala de estar, rodeado de carteles, programas, documentos, parafernalia ... y hablamos durante horas. Él, efectivamente, donó todos los documentos a los archivos y me dejó su apartamento cargado como una bolsa de dama. Fue un placer para mi catalogar todos los documentos, programas, documentos e insertarlos en los archivos. Ellos trajeron a la vida una parte de la historia de AITA / IATA.
Después de estudiar derecho, Piet Cleveringa quería ser alcalde. En los Países Bajos, los alcaldes son nombrados por el Rey y los candidatos debían (en ese tiempo) casarse y pertenecer a un partido político. Ambas condiciones Piet no las podía satisfacer. En lugar de ello, trabajó en el Ministerio del Interior hasta su jubilación.
Piet era un amante del arte, centrándose en las pinturas de arte moderno. A través de los años reunió una gran colección, importante y organizó numerosas exposiciones, junto con su pareja. Después del anuncio de su pareja falleció en 1986 Piet donó su colección de arte al Estado.
Sr. Piet Cleveringa será recordado como una de las figuras más destacadas de la historia de AITA / IATA.
