Materials.

1 pair size 4mm needles, 1 pair double pointed needles size 3.25 plus one extra needle this size.

Yarn of your choice.

Abbreviations.

K knit. P purl. sts stitches. st stitch. tog, together. dec, decrease. inc, increase. rep, repeat alt, alternate. dpn, double pointed needle.

Note.

Cravat starts at the point. It is worked mainly in garter stitch, i.e. every row knit, except for the tube that a small band of k1, p1, rib threads through.

Method

Use size 4mm needles and cast on 3 sts.

Row 1. Knit

Row 2. K1, k twice into the next sts, k1.

Row 3. Knit

Row 4. * K twice into the next sts. K1* rep.

Row 5. Knit

Row 6. K1, k twice into the next st, k to last 2 sts. K twice into the next st. k1.

Repeat the last two rows till 40 sts. ( Can be smaller if desired.)

Knit 6 rows straight

Row 45. K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k1.

Row 46. Knit

Repeat these 2 rows till 32 sts.

Tube.

Use spare dpn. * k1, then slip the next st onto the spare dpn held at the back of the work, purl the next stitch, from the front left hand needle, onto the front right hand needle, repeat in this fashion all along the row. You will have 16 k1, p1, sts on the front needle and16 plain sts on the back needle.

This is going to form the tube.

Work only on the front sts. Work 15 rows k1, p1. Rib

Break yarn, rejoin to remaining needle, and work 16 rows k1, p1, rib. You are now going to join the tube by joining yarn to front needle, knit 1 stitch from the front needle, then knit 1 stitch from the back needle.

Repeat all along the row.

Change back to 4mm needles.

The next row is as the 6th row

Then the next row is a knit row.

Repeat these 2 rows 5 more times.

Scarf Section.

Continue in garter stitch for approx 140 rows, or length required to go around the neck or head.

Next row as 45.

Next row knit

Repeat these 2 rows 5 times (32 sts)

Next row k2 tog, 16 times

Change to smaller needles. K1, p1, rib for 15 rows.

Next row inc. into every stitch

Change back to 4mm needles

Work 5 rows garter stitch.

Next row as 6.

Next row knit.

Repeat these 2 rows 3 more times.

Work 6 rows without shaping.

Next row as 45.

Knit one row

Repeat these 2 rows till 4 sts

Next row k1, k2 tog, k1

Last row cast off 3 sts.

Finishing.

Sew in all ends. Leave tube open for the shaped end to push into at the ribbing, forming the cravat.
