MINUTES

Meeting of October 13, 2016


Prescille Yamamoto called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

I.  ROLL CALL:

PRESENT: Regina Barall, Terrye Blackstone, Joan Coates, Glynis McKenzie, Judy Okeson, Maureen Rodgers, Dan Russell, Betty Russell, and Prescille Yamamoto.

ABSENT: Karen Howe, Rebecca LaCosse, and Susan Tukey. Florence Schroeter is excused.

II.  APPROVAL OF MINUTES:

Motion By: Maureen Rodgers moved to approve the September 9, 2016 minutes.

Second: Betty Russell

III.  CHAIR’S REPORT: No report.

IV.  CORRESPONDENCE: No correspondence.

V.  COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Art League May Festival: No report.

Teachers Art Show: Prescille Yamamoto will be contacting Tracy Kane, District Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts and the East Hartford Parks and Recreation Department to finalize a date; preferably November 4th and 5th.

Bus Trip: Maureen Rodgers reported she called the Clark Institute in Williamstown. The fee to get in the Clark Institute is $20.00 per person. She is looking into the transportation and cost to travel to the Clark Institute. She is proposing the last Saturday in April or the 1st Saturday in May, 2017.

Dance: Regina Barall scheduled March 12, 2017, Sunday from 1 – 4 p.m. at the East Hartford Cultural Center, titled ‘The American Experience in Dance.’

Dance, April 2017: Regina Barall scheduled ‘April in Paris’ on Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 1 – 5 p.m.

Early Childhood: Regina Barall spoke with Lisa Beaucham, Principal. They are looking into a date for the program.

EHSYF: Glynis McKenzie mentioned they are planning a ‘Parents Appreciation Night’ on December 17, 2017 in the auditorium of the East Hartford Cultural Community Center. They will be showing the film “Love Actually” which is ‘R’ rated. They will be charging $5.00 to cover the cost of the screening and be offering free popcorn.

Film: No report.

Goodwin College Humanities Festival: Glynis McKenzie said that due to timing and poor communication that the Fine Arts Commission would not be involved this year. The Festival is running October 17 – 21, 2016. The theme: “The Power of Voice: Wellness and Healing through the Humanities.”

Holiday Fest: Prescille Yamamoto confirmed that Paul Bisaccia has scheduled December, 3, 2016 at First Church. He will have the posters for the event ready by the end of October. Prescille will get in touch with Jerry Scheinfeldt to orchestrate the tuning components.

Library Programs: No report.

Mini Grants: Betty Russell will be picking up the completed Mini Grants applications from Tracy Kane, District Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts. Motion carried that her committee will be Joan Coates, Maureen Rodgers, and Judy Okeson. Betty and her committee will review the Mini Grants applications and announce the winners at the November meeting.

Music: Glynis McKenzie reported that she is continuing to search for a venue for The New England Chamber Choir to perform February 19, 2017 with a “High Notes and High Tea” Concert. She also mentioned that The Greater Hartford Opera Ensemble will not be performing as the EHCCC was not available on October 30, 2016.

Prescille Yamamoto mentioned that Paul Bisaccia will be performing at Manchester Community College on October 21, 2016 at 1:00 p.m.

Sounds of Summer: Glynis McKenzie suggested that the Fine Arts Commission members consider possibilities for the 2017 season now as the East Hartford Parks and Recreation Department will need to know by February 2017.

Art Programs – Exhibits / Demos: Terrye Blackstone announced that Bill Dougal will conduct an Art presentation including demo. Topic: ‘Illustration, caricatures, and cartooning” on Tuesday, October 18, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the East Hartford Community Center. Terrye motioned that his fee is $125 not $100 as previously approved. Terrye mentioned that there was an article about Mr. Dougal in the East Hartford Gazette.

Motion: Judy Okeson moved to increase payment to Bill Dougal for his October 2016 demonstration to $125.00.

Dan Russell commented on exhibit at the Clare Gallery which includes some of his work. Maureen Rodgers mentioned that it was a very nice afternoon at the Clare Gallery opening reception.

IX.  MEMBER’S CONCERNS: Glynis McKenzie reported that there is interest to revive East of the River’s Cue & Curtain, a group which performed plays in the 1990s. She requested that the Commission rent an EHCCC meeting room for the group to have an organizational meeting on November 2, 2016.

Motion: Glynis McKenzie moved to host a meeting for the Cue and Curtain Group.
