Period:______

Title: “It’s your density”

Problem/Purpose: The purpose is to the compare different objects and see which one is the densest. The objects are a book, a metal cube, a movie, and a marble.

Materials:

1.  One student from each group will get the objects:

  1. book
  2. metal cube
  3. movie
  4. marble

2.  One student from each group will get a scale, a ruler and a graduated cylinder.

Research/Observations: (List 1 observation for each object. What does it feel like?)

  1. book ______
  2. metal cube______
  3. movie ______
  4. marble______

Hypothesis: (What object is the densest? Remember, use an “If…then...because” sentence. Write what you think and why!) (2 points)

______

______

______

______

Test/Procedure:

1.  In the table below, record the following measurements for each object (make sure you write the units for each measurement): (3 points)

Object / book / metal cube / movie
Width (cm)
Length (cm)
Height (cm)
Mass (g)
Object / Marble (irregularly shaped)
Volume (in mL) – **you must use displacement. Take the ending volume and subtract the beginning volume.
Mass (g)

3.  Volume is the amount of space occupied by an object.

  1. For the 3 regularly shaped objects, multiply the width times the length times the height to find the volume of each object. The units will be cm³.Write the units next to the volume calculation. (5 points)
  1. book: ______
  2. metal cube: ______
  3. movie: ______
  4. Since the marble is irregularly shaped, write the volume in mL.
  5. marble: ______

4.  Density = mass / volume

Divide the mass (in the chart) of each object by the volume (what you just calculated on the previous page) of each object. This is the density of the object. The units will be g/cm³or g/mL (1 g/cm³ is equal to 1 g/mL). Write the units next to the density calculation. (5 points)

  1. book: ______
  2. metal cube: ______
  3. movie: ______
  4. marble: ______

Analyze the results:

What is the densest object? ______(1 point)

What is the least dense object? ______(1 point)

Conclusion: (Remember: My hypothesis was (or was not) supported because…)(Also, include data to support this.) (3 points)
