20. Project Work: Post Graduation

i) Design project: - “Design of water distribution system for M.P.C. colony, Belapu”.

ii) Thesis: - “Effect of spatially varied hydraulic conductivity on salt water intrusion”.

Abstract: - Study on saline water intrusion into heterogeneous fresh water unconfined coastal aquifer is taken up to investigate the motion of the sea water – fresh water interface for the case of spatially varied hydraulic conductivity under sudden variation of water table situations. A galerkin finite element model is used to solve vertically integrated fresh water equations derived based on the basis of the sharp interface approach. The adequacy of the model is verified through existing solution. The model is then used to carry out the parametric studies on the behaviour of sea water – fresh water interface subjected to different scenarios of spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity including effect of a semi-pervious barrier.

The effects of location and width of the barrier, hydraulic conductivity of the barrier and water table reduction on interface motion are analysed. It is observed that as the hydraulic conductivity of the barrier increases, the variation in interface motion is decreasing. A sudden drop interface profile at barrier location is observed due to low hydraulic conductivity of the semi-pervious barrier. This drop is increasing with the increase in barrier width. Upcoming of salt water is occurring for full reduction of water table for all barrier widths. As the barrier location shifting location shifting towards the landward side, it is observed that the interface is advancing more towards inland. Among the various barrier locations considered for the investigation, barrier placed at 0.5Lo and 0.75Lo seems to be more advantageous when compared with that of other locations.

Key Words:Costal Aquifer, Sea Water, Fresh Water, Semi-pervious Barrier, Interface, Finite Element Method.
