Hosted Messaging and Collaboration Solution
Full Service Design and Deployment Offering

1 HMC Solution Full Service Design & Deployment Service Offering

The Hosted Messaging and Collaboration (HMC)Solution builds on the industry-wide success of Microsoft®Exchange 2000 to provide a powerful foundation for the development of world-class hosted messaging services. The HMC Solution enables service providers to deploy a scalable and proven messaging solution which can quickly and cost-effectively deliver secure, customer-oriented collaborative messaging services in a shared infrastructure model. The solution is a pre-defined and pre-tested configuration including hardware, software, and services that can be used to support many thousands of concurrent users.

The HMCSolution Full Service Design and Deployment Offering is the accompanying consulting engagement provided by Microsoft Consulting Services (MCS) or Compaq Professional Services (CPS) that helps youimplement the HMC Solution on your premise. By design, this consulting service engagement takes you through all project phases including plan, build, deploy, and operate. This offering aids those that desire turn-key services to support delivery of their HMC Solution in weeks rather than months. It accelerates time to revenue and minimizes risks through the use of highly qualified consultants as well as proven hardware and software configuration details. The HMC Solution delivered supports a generous number of mailboxes initially and is easily scalable to virtually any number of concurrent users.

Benefits

Relying on internal teams to deploy new, unfamiliar technologies and services into the marketplace always has inherent risks, and too often those risks manifest themselves as schedule delays and lost revenue opportunities. MCS and/or CPS use a reference architecture that enables you to reduce the cost and the amount of time it takes to bring to market the Hosted Messaging and Collaboration Solution. This architecture enables the creation of a solution with a low total cost of ownership, as well as one that offers a common extensible baseline for future Microsoft and third-party-based hosting offerings.

MCS works with your team to help achieve a high quality design by forming a small, interdependent tight-knit team with your personnel. As part of this process, Microsoft facilitates the transfer of engineering and design expertise to your technical staff (assuming adequate training and background already exist on the Microsoft Windows® 2000 Server and Microsoft Exchange 2000 platforms) so that your personnel can properly design, deliver and support your services.

To ensure consistent results, MCS and CPS consultants follow the process, team, and risk models from the Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) and Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF). For more information on these models, see and

Objectives

In the course of implementing the Microsoft HMC Full Service Design and Deployment Service Offering, MCS/CPSconsultants will work closely with your staff to deliver a production-ready shared hosting platform based on the Hosted Messaging and CollaborationSolution, which relies on Microsoft Exchange 2000. The main goal of this service is to ensure a quality, fully functional implementation of the pre-defined configuration of Hosted Exchange. This is done by providing the following:

  • An initial assessment workshop with your team to confirm requirements, set expectations and review the customer premises
  • Onsite setup and configuration of the systems, network components and Microsoft Exchange application
  • Verification testing to ensure a fully functioning system
  • Knowledge transfer to your operations and support staff
  • Post-launch support to ensure smooth initial product release
  • Program management for the life of the project

MCS/CPS will also deliver the following documents, tools, and engagement documentation deliverables:

  • Vision/scope document
  • Project plan
  • Roles and responsibilities document
  • Finalized design document
  • Installation notes delta prepared by the project team
  • Deployment guide
  • Operations & Support guide
  • Project review document

HMC Solution Specifications

The following business and/or product definition criteria are the basis for this solution design:

  • Support for a mix of client software, with approximately 90% Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI) users and 10% Outlook Web Access (OWA) users
  • Deployment in a single physical data center
  • Active Directory architecture deployed in single shared forest and a single domain
  • English-language specific server installation
  • Compaq servers and storage

Delivery and Packaging

The basicHMC Solution Design and Deployment service offering is provided over approximately 8 weeks.

This solution is deployed in four discrete phases, as described in the HMC Full Service Design & Deployment Service Offering Process and Scheduletable in this document. Each of these phases clearly delineates a milestone and defines a set of deliverables that are provided at the completion of each phase.

MCS/CPS will provide program management throughout each phase of deployment to manage Microsoft’s implementation resources and communicate with your management, marketing, and technical teams.

Excluded Work Items

The following items are excluded from the estimated 8 week project duration period.

  • Any integration with other systems not a part of the specified solution
  • Implementation of any software other than that specified as part of the solution bundle
  • Any migration of users to the new service
  • Any end user customer support
  • Integration with provisioning, billing and customer care systems is out of scope for this version of the Service Offering, but MCS/CPS can prepare customer proposals in this area.

HMC Full Service Design & Deployment Service Offering Process and Schedule

Objectives / Microsoft Resources / Client Resources / Deliverables
phase 1: Plan (1 week)
The Planning Phasestarts with the discoveryof your core business objectives, drivers, project constraints, and yourteam's skills and capabilities. This allows the team to define a vision statement for the HMC Solution offering as well as the scope of the project. Construction of the master project plan, team structure and description of roles and responsibilities provide the team with an approach that guides the entire project. Finally, the team determines the functional requirements for the HMC Solution necessary to satisfy the business objectives and finish the Planning Phase by documenting the risks that could impact the success of the project. / One senior consultant to facilitate, document, and prepare for the presentation of the Plan Phase results / Senior business, marketing, and technical people should be available to discuss current and future service goals, specifications, and the project plan /
  • Project Vision and Scope
  • Master Project Plan
  • Functional Specification
  • Initial risk assessment
  • Team structure with roles and responsibilities

phase 2: Build (2 weeks)
The solution's design is defined and documented during the Build Phase of the project. During the Build Phase, the teamproduces a detailed design of theirspecific HMC Solution implementation. It is based on the functional specifications defined in the Planning Phase as well as the service level objectives set forth in the Build Phase. It includes the detailed configuration of the system as well as the design of operational and support capabilities necessary to maintain it. The Build Phase concludes with a proof of concept that ensures the functional specification defined in the Plan Phased can be delivered by the solution design. / Principal and Senior consultants
Other consultants as required / Technical staff /
  • Service Level Definitions
  • Conceptual Design
  • Physical Design
  • Proof of Concept

phase 3: Deploy (3 weeks)
The Deployment Phase may include the completion of the proof of concept which is followed by a 1-week session at our Microsoft Partner Solutions Center (MPSC) in Redmond, Washington—or at a test lab in your facilities. During this stage of the project, the team conducts a pilot thatis used to verify the architecture, build a fully working environment (as defined in the design document), and facilitate knowledge transfer to your engineers. This work goes beyond the function specifications testing done in the proof of concept and focuses on building what will be deployed into production during the second week of this phase of work. Once the complete design has been validated, built, and tested, the final deployment will be done at your data center location. To additional serviceofferings provided in this phase include:
  • Rapid Server Platform Deployment: During this phase we will assist you in developing a consistent, reliable, and rapidprocess, based on best-practices,proven processes, and an automation methodology,to deploy the Microsoft platform and applications on hundreds of computers per day.
  • Supportability Review: Microsoft Premier Support Services (PSS) is engaged to review the HMC Solution configuration and ensure readiness of the operational support services that will be provided by Microsoft.
Once the Hosted Messaging and Collaboration environment is built, your deployment engineers will perform additional validation as defined and indicated within the design documents. This includes the implementation of operational support systems and the testing of routine management processes. / Twoconsultants
