Lab Station 1

1.  Fill the clear plastic cup about half full of water.

2.  Take ONE alka-seltzer tablet out of the package.

3.  Write down three physical properties EACH for the water and alka-seltzer tablet in the data table on your lab sheet.

4.  Drop the alka-seltzer tablet into the water in the cup.

5.  Record what you observe happening in the data table on your lab sheet.

6.  Tell whether this was a physical or chemical change on your lab sheet.

7.  Explain how you know.

8.  Pour the contents of the cup down the drain, rinse the cup out, and return to counter. Wipe up any spilled water.

Lab Station 2

1.  Get one glow stick out of the package.

2.  Write down three physical properties of the glow stick in the data table on your lab sheet.

3.  Bend the glow stick all along its length so that you hear cracking and popping.

4.  Shake the glow stick vigorously.

5.  Record what you observe in the data table on your lab sheet.

6.  Tell whether this was a physical or chemical change on your lab sheet.

7.  Explain how you know.

8.  Return the glow stick to the counter.

Lab Station 3

1.  Fill the clear plastic cup about half full of water.

2.  Get about a teaspoon of salt in the spoon.

3.  Write down three physical properties EACH for the water and salt in the data table on your lab sheet.

4.  Drop the salt into the water in the cup and stir vigorously with the spoon until you can’t see the salt anymore.

5.  Record what you observe in the data table on your lab sheet.

6.  Tell whether this was a physical or chemical change on your lab sheet.

7.  Explain how you know.

8.  Clean up any spilled salt or water. Take your cup of salt water with you to the next lab station.

Lab Station 4

1.  Write down three physical properties of your saltwater.

2.  Pour about half of your cup of saltwater into the pot on the stove. Turn the heat on high.

3.  BE VERY CAREFUL TO NOT GET BURNED!!!

4.  Let the water boil until it is gone.

5.  Record what you observe happening in the data table on your lab sheet.

6.  Tell whether this was a physical or chemical change on your lab sheet.

7.  Explain how you know.

8.  Turn off the stove and rinse out the pan. Return the pan to the stove.

Lab Station 5

1.  Fill the clear plastic cup with about an inch of vinegar.

2.  Get about a teaspoon of baking soda in the spoon.

3.  Write down three physical properties EACH for the vinegar and baking soda in the data table on your lab sheet.

4.  Feel of the bottom of the cup with just vinegar in it.

5.  Drop the baking soda into the vinegar in the cup.

6.  Watch the cup and also feel of the bottom of the cup again. Notice the temperature change of the cup.

7.  Record what you observe happening in the data table on your lab sheet.

8.  Tell whether this was a physical or chemical change on your lab sheet.

9.  Explain how you know.

10. Pour the contents of the cup down the drain and rinse the cup out. Return cup to the counter.

11. Clean up any spilled baking soda or vinegar.

Lab Station 6

1.  Pour milk into the clear dish on the counter until it just covers the bottom.

2.  Drop four DROPS of different colors of food coloring into four different areas in the milk carefully.

3.  DO NOT mix and DO NOT move the dish at all.

4.  Record three physical properties EACH of the milk and the food coloring.

5.  Record three physical properties of the dishwashing liquid in the bottle on the counter.

6.  Drop 1-2 DROPS of dishwashing liquid into the center of the dish containing the milk and food coloring.

7.  Record what you observe happening in the data table on your lab sheet.

8.  Tell whether this was a physical or chemical change on your lab sheet.

9.  Explain how you know.

10.  Pour the contents of the dish down the drain.

11.  Rinse out the dish and return it to the counter.

12.  Clean up any spilled liquid.
