Music Suggestions for September 2nd – September 30th
Year B:22nd – 26th Sundays of Ordinary Time/ Te Wā Noa Note: Some parishes celebrate Season of Creation during September
Priority for Singing:
→ The most important parts of the Mass to sing are;
Gospel Acclamation, Holy Holy, Memorial Acclamation and Amen.
→ Next most important are;
Entrance or Gathering Song, Gloria, Psalm and Song during the procession to Communion.
Note: the words of the Gloria cannot be substituted for any other hymn or song.
From The GIRM (General Instruction of the Roman Missal)
Paragraph 47. “When the people are gathered and as the Priest enters with the Deacon and ministers, the entrance chant begins. Its purpose is to open the celebration, foster the unity of those who have been gathered, introduce their thoughts to the mystery of the liturgical time or festivity, and accompany the procession of the Priest and ministers.”
The Principle of Gender Inclusive Language:It is appropriate to ensure the words used in sung music are gender inclusive. / Kaupapa Māori – Māori Dimension: Included in the terms of reference for the National Liturgy Office is “ensure the distinctive identity of the Catholic Church in Aotearoa New Zealand with its Māori dimension is present in the liturgy.” (NZCBC’s Terms of Reference for NLO 2015 1.2b.)Kaupapa Māori has been written to support this initiative. The 4th dimension of Kaupapa Māori, is Māori music, and the first priority it lists is to promote the use of Māori music where appropriate. Tama Ngākau Mārie SP 285, Mā te Mārie a te Atua -Ngā Hīmene 71, SP 225 – tune: Old One Hundredth, Wairua Tapu Ngā Hīmene 95, are included for possible inclusion in your parish music over the next month. For your copyright acknowledgement; © 2004 Ngā Hīmene, used with permission. You do not need to report your use of waiata or hymns from Ngā Hīmene.
The Psalmist: “The psalmist, or cantor of the psalm, proclaims the Psalm after the first reading and leads the gathered assembly in singing the refrain. The psalmist may also, when necessary, intone the Gospel Acclamation and verse.” Sing to The Lord; Music in Divine Worship: para 34
National Liturgy Office:
Suggested Mass Settings:In principle, select one mass setting and use it consistently for the parts of the Mass throughout a Liturgical Season. As the season of Ordinary time is very long, you might find it appropriate to use a different mass setting at times, though still important to use the mass setting in its entirety (i.e. the Gloria, Holy Holy, Memorial Acclamation etc. should be from the same musical setting).

Mother Earth

(tune - Amazing Grace)

1. Creator God, you formed our world

Midst Milky Way’s great swirl

Sweet Mother Earth, a home for all

The Cosmos’ richest pearl

2. This wondrous globe, our dwelling place

So tranquil and serene

For humankind a gift of grace

In blues and vibrant green

3. Yet in our hands so fraught with woe

When greed o’er shadows care

Our Earth her wounds begin to show

As we sleep unaware

4. ‘Twas you that sent creation’s spark

To shape this wondrous ground

So all that is would have your mark

And would with Christ resound.

5. All that has life or form or shape

Has from you had its birth

How urgent then that we create

Deep care for Mother Earth

Tune – Amazing Grace
