March 19, 2013

Dear Mr Pelling

Thank you for your request dated the7th February 2013 under Freedom of information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) for details on how many vehicles the Scottish Government (and/or its agencies) operate / own / lease, of these, the total of; hybrid, electric and hydrogen fuel vehicles. In addition, how many vehicles does the Scottish Government (and/or its agencies) anticipate to own / lease / operate in 2014, detailing the expected total number of hybrid, electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

The Scottish Government’s core vehicle fleet is made up of 224 owned vehicles and 1 leased vehicle. A full breakdown of the fleet by fuel category and type is detailed on the attached table.

The Scottish Government’s replacement policy is to consider a replacement when a vehicle has reached 80,000 miles or six years. The final decision will also depend on the condition and history of the car. The replacement vehicle will be one that is fit for purpose and offers a significant lower CO2 output than the vehicle being replaced (where this is possible). We continually monitor developments in the open market and always look to evaluate new greener technologies as and when they become available. We do not hold information about the composition of the fleet in 2014.

We are unable to provide you with details of the vehicles operated by the Agencies of the Scottish Government as this information is not held centrally. To obtain this information you will have to approach each Agency directly. Contact details are accessible via the following link: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/About/Information/FOI/19260/18095

If you are unhappy with this response to your request, you may ask us to carry out an internal review, by writing to Director General Governance and Communities, R1 Spur, Saughton House, Broomhouse Drive, Edinburgh, EH11 3XD. Your request should explain why you wish a review to be carried out, and should be made within 40 working days of receipt of this letter, and we will reply within 20 working days of receipt. If you are not satisfied with the result of the review, you then have the right to make a formal complaint to the Scottish Information Commissioner.

Yours sincerely
