ICEBREAKER STATISTICS

As of 2008, there are about 2.5 million women in the U.S. who have survived breast cancer.

8 out of 9 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease

70% of women who develop breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors

2.4 million women living in the U.S. have been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer.

In 2006, 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. 40,820 women died of breast cancer that year.

Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among U.S. women, accounting for more than 1 in 4 cancers.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

One out of eight American women who live to be 85 years of age will develop breast cancer, a risk that was one out of 14 in 1960.

The greatest risk factor for developing breast cancer is gender (female) and the second is age. Between 2000-2004, 95 percent of new cases and 97 percent of breast cancer deaths occurred in women aged 40 and older.

Women who begin menstruating before age 12 are at increased risk of developing breast cancer. The more menstrual cycles a woman has during her lifetime, the more her risk increases.

White, Hawaiian, and African-American women have the highest incidence of invasive breast cancer in the United States (approximately four times higher than the lowest group).

According to the American Cancer Society, in general, breast cancer rates have risen about 30% in the past 25 years in western countries, due in part to increased screening which detects the cancer in earlier stages.

Beginning at the age of 20, every woman should practice monthlybreast self-examsand begin a routine program of breast health, including scheduling physician performed clinical breast exams at least every three years.

B’NAI B’RITH GIRLS-Read the following passage and then check the boxes that apply to you.

Genes and breast cancer(

“Scientists have found two specific genes that when mutated are important in the development of breast cancer. They are called BRCA1 and BRCA2. Every woman has these genes, but some women have inherited a mutated form of one or both genes. Inheriting a mutated form of BRCA1 or BRCA2 increases a woman’s risk of breast and ovarian cancer. However, not all breast cancers are due to inherited mutations. Inherited gene mutations, including mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2, account for only about 5 to 10 percent of all cases of breast cancer, while most breast cancers are due to spontaneous gene mutations.”

you are younger and have been diagnosed with breast cancer (below age 50)

your mother, sister or daughter has had breast cancer before age 50 or ovarian cancer at any age

a woman in your family has had both breast cancer and ovarian cancer

a woman in your family has had breast cancer in both breasts

your family is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent

a male in your family has had breast cancer

If one or more of those boxes are checked it may be likely that you carry the mutation in the BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 gene.

Be aware of your family heritage if anyone in your family had breast cancer.

Research the disease

Experience life and don’t live in fear

Ask questions! There are TONS of women survivors who would be happy to answer them!

Stay Strong!

Talk to your family members to learn more.

Carefully self exam your breasts monthly

Always lend a shoulder to someone you know going through this battle

Never think your too young for breast cancer

Challenge your doctor because sometimes they are wrong

Express your worries and fears to friends and family

Remember to always keep hope.

Havdallah Service: Lahat/Haganah Breast Cancer Awareness Night THEME: CHALLANGE

Supplies:

Havdallah Candle (JESS HAS A PINK ONE USE IT!)

Spice Box

Kiddush cup of wine (pink maybe!)

Enough pink ribbons for everyone (pre-cut), all light pink but 5 dark pink

Pink candles to set an intimate mood

Pink pieces of paper (enough for all) & black pens

Havdallah prayer sheets

Start: Girls sitting on floor in their own little space with room around for leader to walk around. Pink candles all around and lights dimmed, leader of havdallah standing up.

1. Leader passes out the pre-cut ribbon to each girl. Ask the girls who have dark pink ribbons to stand up.

2. Ask the girls standing up to share a time where they had to under-go a challenge. Then have them sit down but still hold on to their ribbons.

-To ensure this goes smoothly please ask the Mazkirahs of both chapter to prepare a challenge story & share. *Make sure that they get the dark pink ribbon.

3. READ THIS: “Carey Hoffman Weiner underwent many challenges in her life. Growing up as the eldest of three Ashkenazi Jewish children her family discovered the middle child was mentally retarded and has to live in an institution. Carey’s youngest sister Staci was the gorgeous skinny one everyone loved. Growing up she had to deal with many challenges but she never thought that it would be challenging something that saved her life. Breast cancer runs in her family. Her mother and aunt recommended getting checked for the BRCA mutation. Her doctor said she was too young at age 35 for that. But Carey challenged his authority & demanded the test. Finally she got it and resulted positive. Then they found the lump that led her big brown eyes to leek out salty tears. They found the lump that caused her daughter to be afraid of her. Her twins Abby and Aiden at age 5 did not understand what mommy was going though.”

4. ASK GIRLS what they found shocking in this blurb. Try to have a discussion about how Carey’s own daughter Abby was afraid of her.

-To ensure this goes smoothly please ask the NSiahs before to both make sure they can contribute their own opinion talking about how they would feel if they were Carey and their daughter Abby was afraid.

5. HAVE GIRLS WITH DARK PINK RIBBONS STAND UP. Tell them that they carry the mutated gene.

6. READ: “If Carey did not push the doctor to give her a mammogram Aiden and Abby may not have a mother living. Mammograms are not given until women turn 40.Early detection, Cary knowing her body, and her challenging of her doctor was what enabled Carey to be a survivor. Although she survived this horrible challenge and now has both of her breasts removed , the challenge did not stop.”

7. ASK girls if anyone knows what may now be the challenge in Carey’s life.

*Note have the girls with the pink ribbons still standing. The point is that they should feel awkward standing because that is how breast cancer makes people feel.

8. “Carey battles post-traumatic-stress disorder and suffers severe depression. This has led some her friends to not want to be around her. Her own sister Staci is getting fed up with Carey’s constant pessimistic attitude. The challenge of breast cancer will never leave Carey’s life. It stays with her like the tattoo on her ankle of a pink ribbon. But if it wasn’t for challenging over her doctor Carey would not be here”

9. Have girls right a letter to their 35 year old self stating their biggest challenge they are going through now & making themselves promise they will test for the BRCA mutation gene if they have any family history of breast cancer. Ask girls to make them promise in the letter that when they receive the letter they will start getting mammograms and monthly self breast examinations if they do not already. Have Girls fold paper & write their first, middle & last name on it as well as parents names & date of birth on it. Tell them Allison WILL mail these letters to them before their 35th birthday. Have them put as much other information as possible so my stalkage jobs later in life may be a tad easier.

10. Have girls all go around and share a goal for the up-coming week in which they will CHALLENGE something/someone. Say “Amen” after each girl shares.

11. Sing & perform havdallah prayers & songs.
