SAFETY ALERT

FIREARMS SAFETY

SAFETY FIRST! when handling, using , or storing any type of firearm, safety must be your first concern. If you do have firearms in your home be sure they are kept in a safe manner and that you are following basic gun safety. Gun safety rules must be understood and applied in all situations involving firearms. The three fundamental rules of gun safety must always be applied simultaneously when handling or using a gun:

1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

CASCOM 190-2, POSSESSION, USE, TRANSPORTATION, AND SECURITY OF PRIVATELY OWNED WEAPONS, requires

1. Soldiers assigned, attached to, or residing on Fort Lee and their families to register their privately owned weapons (POWs) with the Provost Marshal within 72 hours of their introduction onto the installation.

2. POWs and privately owned ammunition will not be stored in troop barracks. POWs belonging to soldiers living in troop barracks will be stored in unit arms rooms.

3. POWs stored in family housing or UPH will be kept unloaded and secured with a locking device that deters both theft and unauthorized tampering.

4. Privately owned ammunition will be stored in a separate locked container and shall not exceed 2000 rounds.

5. POWs will not be stored in privately owned vehicles except for short periods not to exceed 12 hours. POWs will be unloaded and out of public view while in the vehicle and the vehicle will be locked.

6. No person will conceal a weapon on their person or in a vehicle while on Fort Lee.

7. If a privately owned firearm is lost or stolen, it will be reported to the Provost Marshal immediately.

8. Persons who find or otherwise come into possession of firearms believed to be lost or stolen will report this immediately to the Provost Marshal.

If you own a gun and do not know how to operate it, do not experiment with it. Follow the three fundamental rules stated above, and seek competent assistance and instruction. An untrained adult can be as dangerous as a curious child. Handgun training is available through the Gun Rack, telephone
