SODDING

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE

A. Topsoil: Section 329120.

1.02 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data:

1. Common name of each grass species.

B. Quality Control Submittals:

1. Grower’s Qualifications Data:

a. Name, business address, and telephone number of sod grower.

b. Statement from grower listing the qualifications as required under Quality Assurance Article.

2. Certificate: As required under Quality Assurance Article.

1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Grower’s Qualifications: Sod shall be commercially grown by a producer specializing in sod production and harvesting with a minimum 5 years experience.

B. Certifications: Sod shall be accompanied by a certificate indicating compliance with the regulations of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.

1.04 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Tag sod with common name of each grass species.

B. Protect root system from exposure to wind or sun.

C. Protect sod against dehydration, contamination, and heating during transportation and delivery.

D. Do not deliver more sod than can be installed within 24 hours.

E. Store sod in a moistened condition under shade, or cover with wet burlap.

F. Deliver commercial fertilizer in standard size bags showing weight, analysis, and the name of the manufacturer.

1.05 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Do not install sod when temperature is below 32 degrees F.

B. Do not install sod on saturated or frozen soil.

C. Protect newly installed sod against vehicular traffic.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. Sod: Turf sod containing 95 percent pure permanent dense growth Kentucky Blue and fine leaved Fescue grasses. Color, leaf texture, and density shall be uniform. Sod shall be free of diseases, nematodes, and insects.

1. Mowed Height When Harvested: 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inches.

2. Thatch: Maximum 1/2 inch.

3. Weeds:

a. Free of Bermuda grass, quack grass, Johnson grass, poison ivy, nut sedge, nimble will, Canada thistle, bind weed, bent grass, wild garlic, ground ivy, perennial sorrel, and brome grass.

b. Containing less than 5 jimson weed, mustard, lamb’s quarter, chick weed, cress, or crab grass plants per 100 sq ft.

B. Fertilizer: Commercial fertilizer, 5-10-5 inorganic or organic, containing not less than 5 percent nitrogen, 10 percent available phosphoric acid and 5 percent water soluble potash.

1. Other fertilizers with a 1-2-1 ratio, such as 10-20-10 or 6-12-6, may be substituted for above.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 PREPARATION

A. Scarify topsoil to depth of 2 inches in compacted areas.

B. Apply 5-10-5 fertilizer at the rate of 20 lb per 1000 sq ft or one lb of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft for other ratios.

C. Rake fertilizer into top 2 inches of topsoil.

D. Water dry soil to depth of 4 inches 48 hours before sodding.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. Begin sodding at bottom of slopes.

B. Install sod in strips, edge to edge, parallel to contours, with staggered joints.

C. Do not stretch or overlap sod.

D. Peg sod on slope ratio of 1 on 2 or steeper with minimum of two 8 inch stakes per sq yd.

E. Sprinkle sod immediately after installation.

F. Tamp or roll sufficiently to incorporate sod with topsoil.

G. Water sod and soil to depth of 4 inches within four hours after tamping or rolling.

3.03 LAWN ESTABLISHMENT

A. Maintain the sod at heights between 1-1/2 and 2-1/2 inches. Include a minimum of 2 mowings.

B. Water sod once a week between April 1 and October 1. Provide 3 gallons per sq yd per watering. Apply fungicides or use any other horticultural operation necessary for proper establishment and maintenance of sodded areas.

C. Care for sodded areas until all Work of this Contract is completed and accepted.

D. Replace sod in areas which show bare spots, deterioration, or is otherwise deemed unacceptable by the Director’s Representative.
