5.  2014 “End the R Word” Champaign

·  Dr. Seth Keller

o  Review “R-word” Champaign letter that may be used for healthcare practitioners

ACTION: Introduce this letter to students and community healthcare leaders to increase awareness and influence behavior changes with regards to dehumanizing language

·  What is it?

o  Spread the Word to End the Word was created to raise awareness of the derogatory use of the R-word (retard or retarded) and its negative effects on people with intellectual disabilities, as well as their families and friends.

·  Official day: First Wednesday of March

ACTION: Get into contact with Karl Hejlik (Special Olympics POC) and Larry Clausen(Developmental Disabilities Planning Council-AZ)

·  Lets coordinate activities/rallies within all local chapters!!

o  Ideas:

§  Rally on Campus

·  Booth with Information

·  Stickers, Ribbons – “End the R-Word”

·  “End the Word” – T-shirt raffle

§  Invite Special Olympic participants to campus to participate in a lunch talk for students, faculty, staff about the effects of the “R-word”

§  Collaborate with local community groups ie: YMCA

§  Collaborate with college, minor and major league sports teams and participate in a half time event to promote “Spread the Word to End the Word”

§  Write articles for campus and local publications to highlight your event and increase awareness to the public
