National Assessment of Educational Progress

Lots of sample questions (selected and constructed response) across all math strands

Find out how your 8th graders would compare with the nations’s 8th graders on these items; performance data included.

TIMSS

Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study

Find over 100 released multiple choice and extended response items for both grades 4 and 8 math and science. Some of the 8th grade items were used, with permission, for the 8th grade math CABS (usually modified).

NCTM

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

New resources, featured products, archive of President’s messages, tons more!

Did you know, our very own Hank Kepner is President-elect of NCTM (2007)

MMP

Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership

ALL the CABS, K-8, are here… along with many other resources. This website may go away after the grant is finished.

Think Link Learning for Probes

If you don’t have a password, contact Nancy Bonesho, Assessment and Accountability, 475-8303. Probes are practice assessment items; modify the probe by asking students to explain their thinking.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives

nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html

NSF supported project that began in 1999 to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives related to the NCTM standards for all grade levels.

Book

Mathematics Assessment Sampler Grades 6-8, NCTM, 800-235-7566

Focuses on classroom assessment which supports the NCTM Standards. Compiled from many sources including state assessments. Owing to the limited amount of information to be gleaned from selected response items, they too added “explain your thinking” “justify your answer” or “how do you know”.

Resources

The following pages …

• “Sharing the 10th Grade Descriptors” … Critical and unique document created BY the MPS 8th-9th grade math teachers FOR 8th, 9th, and 10th grade math teachers.

• WKCE-CRT Mathematics Reporting Categories… check it out! What might be some implications for teaching and learning?

• Depths of Knowledge: Mathematics… Descriptions of the four categories of cognitive demand of items on the WKCE-CRT. If the items on the WKCE-CRT demand higher levels of thinking, then shouldn’t our daily instruction and assessment reflect that?

• Released Item Book from the WKCE-CRT, Mathematics Grade 10 … Feel free to use these items with your 8th graders. These items reflect 10th grade descriptors (describe parameters for the test writers of the 10th grade WKCE-CRT). Both 8th and 9th grade math content and curriculum contribute toward this test. Teachers may find out more about a student’s thinking if they modify a selected response item by asking students to justify their choice or explain their thinking.

• WKCE –CRT Mathematics Assessment Framework… cross-grade level objectives, subskills, and descriptors for grades 3-8, 10. Included here for your knowledge, analysis, and application.

• The MMP Protocol … The MMP Protocol for Analyzing Student Work was introduced in MPS when we were thinking about ways to use CABS to guide the teaching and learning of mathematics in classroom practice.

• The district’s math framework … did you know our framework is based on the research from Adding it Up, National Research Council? The framework also reflects the State standards.
