Transition Arrangements

This qualification was republished in January 2018to extend the last date for enrolment from 31 December 2017 to 31 December 2018and extend the last date of assessment to 31 December 2019.

This qualification has been reviewed and replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in Fellmongery and Leather Processing (Level 3) [Ref: 2486].

It is recommended that candidates currently enrolled in this qualification who will be unable to complete the qualification by the 31 December 2019 transfer to the replacement qualification listed above.

It is the intention of Primary ITO that no existing trainee should be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. Any person who considers they have been disadvantaged may appeal to the Primary ITO, below.

Purpose

This qualification is aimed at people who are entering the leather manufacturing industry with no previous qualifications.

The compulsory section of the qualification covers the knowledge and skills related to working safely and knowledge of hide processing operations.

The elective section enables candidates to select unit standards from the Hide Processing domain that fit with their job roles.

The balance section enables candidates to select unit standards from the Humanities field, Core Generic and Leather Manufacturing subfields and/or the Meat Industry Generic and Core Health domains to meet the qualification credit requirements.

This qualification may lead on to the National Certificate in Bovine Leather Manufacture with strands in Tanning, Retanning and Dyeing, and Finishing [Ref: 0317].

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

Version 4 was issued following review.

Changes to structure and content

  • Overall credit total was decreased from 53 to 43.
  • Standards 1277, 3501, 4248, 4249, 7123, 9677 and 12382 were not included in the Compulsory section, but may be used to meet the credit requirements of the Balance.
  • Elective credit requirements were decreased from 26 to 22.
  • A Balance section was added.
  • The title and credits for standard 497 were updated to reflect changes made at its review.

People currently working towards version 3 of this qualification may either complete the requirements of that version or transfer their results to version 4.

This qualification contains a classification that replaces an earlier classification. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for standards in the expiring classification may continue to use those credits to meet the qualification requirements – see table below.

Previous versions of the qualification

Version 3 was issued following review. Credit total was increased from 42 to 53, standards 8020, 8263 and 8264 were removed from the compulsory section, standards 497, 1277, 3501, 4248, 4249, 7123, 9677, 12382 and 17593 were added to the compulsory section, and the elective section was changed from a list of standards to the Hide Processing domain.

Version 2 was issued following a revision to reflect the change of standard setting body responsibility from the Leather Industry Training Organisation to the New Zealand Industry Training Organisation.

Certification

This certificate will display the logos of NZQA, the New Zealand Industry Training Organisation and the organisation that has been granted consent to assess against standards that meet the requirements of the qualification (accredited).

Quality Management Systems
Providers and Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess by a recognised Quality Assurance Body before they can register credits from assessment against standards. Organisation with consent to assess and Industry Training Organisations assessing against standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
