1.1ESSAY 1.1: Getting to Know your IssuesIntroduction: Every province has issues that are hotly debated. In BC it could be the Site C Dam issue, the privatization of health care or education, the HST, or "affordable" housing.

InstructionsStep: A
Select a provincial issue that is important to you.

  1. Think carefully aboutthe issue.
  2. Take point form notes on what you already know about it. You may need to do some additional research to make this complete. Watching the evening news or reading the paper is a great place to start.

  1. Contact two provincial political parties by phone, email, or in person.
  2. Or, research each party at the library, in magazines, in the newspaper, or on the Internet.
  3. Find out each party's position on the issue you have chosen.
  4. What does each party think about the issue?
  5. Does it have a platform for action on it?

Complete a formal, five-paragraph composition on your chosen issue.

  • Paragraph 1: Describe the issue

2.2 ESSAY 2.2: The Roaring TwentiesInstructionsWrite an essay on the following topic.

To what extent is the term Roaring 20s an appropriate name for that decade?

In your standard 5 paragraph response consider what this decade was like for THREE of the following groups of people (one group per body paragraph):

  1. Canadian Women
  2. Upper and middle class Canadians

Refer to your SS11 Provincial Exam Preparation Package - Section 6, for tips on writing your essay. In particular, read the information on how to tackle a “to what extent” type of essay, like this one. As you will see, your essay is to address what the decade was like for more than one of the groups listed but provide a conclusion re: the appropriateness of the title. In other words, in light of the different experiences of different groups of Canadians, does the term given seem appropriate for your groups?
Your essay must include a thesis statement, an introduction, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion.

2.3 ESSAY 2.3: Canada's Role in World War IIScenarioThe year is 1939. There is a growing feeling of unrest in the international community and it is becoming increasingly apparent that war is at hand. Canadian politicians are divided on what role, if any, Canada should play if war breaks out.Place yourself in the year and time. Some things to consider include:

  • Canada's role in the UN, NATO, and NORAD;
  • the international conflicts Canada became involved in and the ones Canada did not;
  • consider how Canada's foreign policy changed over the years; and
  • consider how the end of communism and the new world order has affected Canada.

3.2 ESSAY 3.2: Canada's Immigration PolicyInstructionsWrite a two to three page essay (between six hundred and seven hundred words) in which you describe and analyze Canada's immigration policy during the 20th century. You must use examples from 1914 on.

Some issues to consider in your essay include:

  • immigration prior to 1914 and how WWI changed the face of immigration;
  • policies throughout the years that excluded or discriminated against certain ethnicities;
  • the impact of the Depression and then WWII on immigration policies;
  • the implications of "colour-blindness";
  • the impact of multiculturalism on immigration;
  • three classes of immigrants in the late 1970s; and
  • current rates and origins of immigrants in Canada.

There is no shortage of material to write about.
