016-3** Restart Printer ESS Errors

1. Disconnect all data connections from the printer.

2. Power down printer and remove the power cord along with any additional accessories that the printer may have. (Memory, Trays, Etc.)

3. After about 15 seconds, Re-connect only the power cord and power on the printer.

4. If NO error shows up from restarting, print out a settings page or report to confirm it is not a hardware issue. **If the error comes up without data cables then the ESS board will need to be replaced.**

5. If settings page prints out, reconnect data connection one at a time and see if error returns.

6. If error returns when reconnecting the data cable, begin trouble shooting software issue from source with steps below.

Common Software Issues that cause the ESS Error

A) First option to try is updating the firmware on the printer via USB or Network if possible. This may clear up the error when printing with current settings so we don’t have to make any additional changes.

B) Check Network settings on printer and confirm that printer is NOT set to dual stack mode. The printer needs to be set to IPv4 for IP Mode. Dual Stack may send corrupted data to the printer.

C) If printer is network connected, try changing the IP address of the printer and then test it over the network. You can test it by printing out a Test Page from the printer properties of the driver.

D) Also confirm that we are not having any network connection issues. Examples would be wireless signal dropping or packet loss on network line. A Local Admin may have to run these tests to confirm that data stream on network is working correctly

E) Also check to see if it only happens from certain document or file versus happens when we print anything. This will help is isolate driver software versus program causing the issue. You can also test by printing a Test Page from within the driver. You can do this by going to ”Printer Properties” and then clicking on “Print Test Page” on bottom of window. Here is sample of page below.

F) Another common issue is the Print Processor settings in the driver itself maybe causing this error. You get there right clicking on the Driver and going to “Printer Properties”.

G) From there, Click on the “Advanced” tab on the top of the window that just popped up. Towards the bottom of that page, click on “Print Processor…” button. You should get this window afterwards.

Change the Left field to “WinPrint” and the right field to “RAW” followed by “OK”. Test the print job from there and see if we get the error or not.

H) Another area that you can try is changing the Driver Type, for example…changing from PCL XL to PCL 5 or PS driver instead. You can do this from the same “Advanced” tab in the Driver as the print processor. Sample provided below.

I) Printing an Adobe file that has lots of Graphics and Font Types. The easiest way around this is to print the file as an Image. This makes the data easier to process at the printer. From the print window on Adobe, click on “Advanced” tab next to Properties and the printer name.

From there, Check mark the box next to ”Print As Image” followed by the “OK” button. After that window closes, click on the “Print” button as normal and see if we get the same error or not. Sample of page is located below. Please note that the Customer may have to do this every time they have an adobe file that is having issues with our printers. Sample provided below.

J) The Print Processor settings in the driver itself maybe causing this error. You get there right clicking on the Driver and going to “Printer Properties”.

K) The Driver Type can also cause this issue. For example, changing from PCL 5 to PS driver instead. You can do this from the same “Advanced” tab in the Driver as the print processor. Sample provided below.
