Position Summary

The internship positions are in either Exploration & Production (E&P) or in Geosciences & Reservoir Engineering (G&RE), our research organization.

All internships provide a short-term work assignment to help enhance your technical and business skills, and to provide you with exposure to career options in the petroleum industry. You will learn primarily through hands-on technical work and one-on-one mentoring by a subject matter expert on your specific project. You will be engaged in valuable work on a challenging project while giving ConocoPhillips the opportunity to evaluate your future fit within our company. Projects have immediate application to ConocoPhillips business needs around the world.

You will have the opportunity to interact with other interns and ConocoPhillips' professionals working on a variety of projects to learn about additional aspects of the industry. In some cases, short courses or field trips may be part of your experience.

E&P intern locations are primarily in Houston, TX, with the possibility of being placed in Anchorage, AK, or Farmington, NM.

G&RE intern locations are primarily in Houston, TX, with the possibility of being placed in Bartlesville, OK.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities of an E&P Geoscientist intern may include:

  • Interpretation of subsurface geoscience and related data to help with our hydrocarbon exploration and development projects
  • Working with a mentor and a group of other professionals to make recommendations for further activities related to basin studies, exploration plays or prospects, or fields
  • Recent intern projects have included:
  • 3D seismic interpretation of fault juxtaposition to predict trap geometry and size
  • Sequence stratigraphic interpretation of an exciting new exploration play
  • Detailed 3D seismic interpretation of known fields to select prospective drilling locations
  • Prospect generation and well proposals in a variety of global locations

Typical responsibilities of a Research Geoscientist intern may include:

  • Working with a mentor and a group of other professionals to develop and enhance new technologies related to hydrocarbon exploration and production.
  • Recent types of technology intern projects have been in these areas:
  • Seismic Reservoir Characterization
  • High Definition Seismic Imaging
  • Structural Analysis and Geomechanics
  • Stratigraphic Systems
  • Basin Evolution and Modeling
  • Geochemistry
  • Reservoir Modeling

Basic/Required

  • Bachelor's degree in geoscience or a closely related technical field
  • Must be currently enrolled or accepted in an accredited MS or PhD program in geology, geophysics, engineering, or applied mathematics or closely related technical field
  • A minimum of ten continuous weeks of technical work for the internship

Preferred

  • Cumulative and major undergraduate GPA greater than 3.4 on a 4.0 scale
  • Graduate school GPA's greater than 3.4 on a 4.0 scale
  • Direct experience in relevant technical work for the petroleum industry (including previous internships or full time experience)
  • Either geophysical focus with strong geological skills, or geological focus with strong analytical/quantitative skills
  • For internships in our research organization a preference is given to candidates enrolled in PhD programs and demonstrating a capability for collaborative research
  • Personal drive for geological or geophysical technical excellence
  • High level of initiative, energy and creativity
  • Willingness to accept responsibility on major projects
  • Strong analytical skills with a practical approach to problem solving
  • Organizational skills - ability to prioritize approach to problem solving
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
