Much thanks from Dennis A. Swick goes to the names listed below in this research. It should also be stated that LDS is an abbreviation for the Latter Day Saints. The number of their microfilm is listed just in case a check wants to be made. The Zwick/Zweck name is found in Bas-Rhin/Haut-Rhin, Alsace-Lorraine, France. Dennis A. Swick, as of 1/20/2006, has still not been able to locate the whereabouts of Mathys Zwick, his wife, or children who he been searching for who are suppose to be from Erlenbach.

Zwicks in France

On LDS microfilm #897215 of the “World Conference” in Salt Lake City, UT in 1969 on Alsace-Lorraine by Francis Himlay it has some of the same information as fiche #6039355, of “World Conference on Records and Genealogical Seminar” by Francois J. Himly, Salt Lake, City, UT, 1969. In a study of Alsace-Lorraine, France of the Zwick group, one of the better books of the Catholic Church would be F. Klee, “Die Kirchenbücher der Stadt Strassburg” in Archiv für Sippenforschung, 1961, pp. 72-73, 15 Catholic parishes, 1681-1792 and for Protestants would be M.J. Bopp, “Die Evangelischen Gemeinden und Hohen Schulen in Elass und Lothringen von der Reformation bis zur Gegenwart”, Neustadt an-der-Aisch, 1963, in 8th Volume, p. 693.

The names common among the Southern German Mennonites were Weber, Müller, and Schneider. These Mennonites settled in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Many who were Dutch settled in the Rhineland before coming to Pennsylvania. These particular last names are found married to the Zwicks/ Swicks.

In 1555 the Peace of Augsburg was done in order to stop the political unrest by

freezing the positions of the Catholics and the Protestants. Princes had the power to choose the religious complexion of their territories but it must be remembered that during this time there were both Roman Catholics and Lutherans in Germany. Some Zwicks were Roman Catholic while others were Lutheran or Reformed. Some of the Reformed Zwicks went to France. Around Strasbourg, France were Zwicks. But it should also be mentioned that on LDS microfilm #749650 Ruprechtsau, Strasbourg, France, 1687-1792 and LDS microfilm #750042 Ruprechtsau, Strassbourg, France, from a LutheranChurch, read by Dennis A. Swick, there were no Zwicks found. Yet on LDS microfilm #727365 Evangelical /Reformed Church, Strasbourg, France, 1666-1716 read by Dennis A. Swick, there were several Zwiks listed from1678 to 1703.

Peter C. Zwick writes, “Back in the 1300’s-1500’s Lotharingia (Lorraine) which included Luxemburg, parts of the Netherlands, the Rhineland and Lorraine was a crowded place and the Őstmarc (east march) began. German speakers moved eastward to settle and gain freedom. In the 1500’s Catholics chased Protestants out of Switzerland and elsewhere and Protestants did likewise to the Catholics later. During the Schwabenzugs (movement of German speakers to Hungary(1722 – 1727, 1763-1767, 1782-1787), people moved to Hungary because they were promised free land and freedom from oppression”. Before 1802, five dioceses existed in Lorraine: Metz, Toul, Verdun, Nancy and Saint-Dié (Nancy and Saint-Dié were created in 1777). All of them belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Trier.

Gerhard Bumann writes, “Dear Dennis, todays Albé is the former Erlenbach, renamed after World War I, when the Alsace came to France. In Albé you will not find any Zwicks, but in the Regions BAS RHIN and HAUT RHIN. I think it is normal, that people "emigrate" from such a little town, to make their fortune nearby. And in Alsace all things are nearby, seen from outside, but possibly inside too. The address of the official telephone book of France Telecom is _ Most of Alsatians speak German or they understand. The Alsace is not totally roman-catholic but there is a
substantial lutheran or reformed (Zwingli!) church. The Alsace was border land for some hundred years (as today) and so they were beaten by wars, and the reign very often (together with the religion)”. There are 10 Zwicks listed in the French telephone book.
On LDS microfilm #745874 Evangelical/Reformed Church, Vendenheim, France, 1685-1787, read by Dennis A. Swick, it has baptisms of Zwicks from 1698 to 1709Nadine Lubin of France presents the Lutheran/Reformed Church of Vendenheim, France. She has: (1) Johann Jacob Zwick (or Jean Jacques), born in 1669 in Vendenheim, which is near Strassbourg (BasRhin) and died 1/14/1735. He was a maker of blank iron and was married to Elizabeth Parrains Schutz and had: (2) Andreas Zwick, b. 10/22/1698, witnesses were: Johannes North, Eva Meyer, and Andreas Kauffmann all from Vendenheim ;(2) Anna Elisabeth Zwick, b. 1/20/1702. On 11/14/1700 Catharine Grunholtz, daughter of Conradt Grunholtz of Vendenheim married to Anna Parrains Waldter. Elizabeth Zwick of Vendenheim is also listed as the daughter of Hans Jacob; (2) Anna Marguerite Zwick, b. 2/2/1705 in Vendenheim and married in 1722 in Hoerdt to Philippe Pfeiffer. The first child of this marriage was: (3) Philippe Jaques Zwick, b. 11/9/1722 in Vendenheim. He died 1/17/1744 in Vendenheim at 11 months. Then on 4/10/1725 she married Martzoll Liss when she was 20. He was the son of Michel Liss and Anne Baum. Martoll Liss was born 11/26/1705 in Hoerdt. He married at 19. He died 2/13/1758 in Vendenheim at 52. The witnesses were Michel Schoeff of Vendenheim and Jean Georges Dudt. The children of Martoll Liss and Anna Marguerite Zwick were: (3) Jean Jaques Liss, b. 10/17/1726 in Vendenheim, d. 11/9/1727 in Vendenheim at 14 months; (3) Jean Jacques Liss, b. 10/17/1726 in Vendenheim, d. 11/9/1727 in Vendenheim at 12 months; (3) Anne Liss, b. 9/18/1728 in Vendenheim, d. 9/23/1728 in Vendenheim at 5 years; (3) Martzolff Liss, b. 9/6/1729 in Vendenheim; Witnesses: Jean Meyer in Vendenheim, Andre Schultz in Tisserand, son of Nicolas Schultz and Brigitte Weyh, b. 1701 in Vendenheim, daughter of Michel Weyh; (3) Jean Jaques Liss, b. 3/3/1733 in Vendenheim, d. 10/24/1735 in Vendenheim at 2; (3) Catherine Liss, b. 11/24/1735 in Vendenheim, d. 3/6/1742 in Vendenheim at 6; (3) Martzolff Liss, b. 2/5/1738 in Vendenheim; (3) Marie Liss, b. 1/22/1741 in Vendenheim; and (3) Anne Liss, b. 1/22/1741 in Vendenheim. Next Johann Jacob Zwick (or Jean Jacques) and Elizabeth Parrains Schutz had:(2) Barbara Zwick, b. 8/8/1700 , witnesses were: Conradt Grunholtz and Anna Weber both of Vendenheim; (2) Catherine Zwick, b. 10/20/1703; and (2) Johann Heinrich Zwick, b. 10/15/1708 . They all were Protestant in faith, Vendenheim is about 15 kilometers north of Strasbourg. They came after the Thirty Year War (source: Nadine Lubin at

z.htm).

Now it seems that the name Hans/Johannes Jacob Zwick is found in both Strasbourgand Vendenheim, France. Nadine Lubin states that Johann Jacob Zwick was born in 1669 in Vendenheim which is near Strassbourg (BasRhin). He marries Elisabeth in about 1697 in Vendenheim. The Hans Jacob Zwick marries Susanna in Strasbourg in 1678 and two other Jacob Zwick’s die in 1666 and 1703.

Another place in France is the city of Wingen. On LDS microfilm #1069713- ProtestantChurch, Wingen, Climbach. 1648-1792, read by Dennis A. Swick,

there were no Zwicks found in Climbach but the name Schweikart appeared. But in a

book of Civil Marriage (1793-1902) from Wingen, Bas-Rhin, Christian Kiefer of France writes, “Jean Baptiste Schandel (teacher) born 17/06/1815 in Wingen , Father: François Joseph Schandel (60 years old) teacher; Mother: Catherine Zwick (60 years old, lives in Wingen). Wedding 05/02/1837 in Wingen with Marguerite Schantz born 06/11/1812 in Wingen. Catherine Zwick, ca. 1777 married François Joseph Schandel, ca. 1777 and they lived in Wingen. Jean Baptiste Schandel has a sister Marie Françoise Schandel born 29/01/1809 in Wingen. In Phalsbourg, Moselle (table of marriages)I have found: (1) Jean Zwick, wedding 13/01/1767 with Marguerite Pfau (also Pfoh ) (from Hilsbach Basse Alsace). Jean’s father is Jean Zwick. His mother is Anne Marie Marklerine. (2) Georges Zwick (25 years old), wedding 07/02/1775 with Marie Elisabeth Jeunesse (from Dabo). Georges father is (1) Jean Zwick. His mother is Anne Marie Merck.(2) Georges Zwick later married with Claudine Fels ,06/05/1783. Georges Zwick and Claudine Fels children were: (3) unknown Zwick; and (3) Elisabeth Zwick who married Johannes Behres. Johannes’ parents were Joseph Behres and Elisabeth Kiefer. Later Johannes Behres married Elisabeth Zwick and their children were: (4) Oskar Behres who married Margaretha Studler; (4) Gisela Behres who married Stefan Erndt and they had: (5) Robert Erndt and (5) Tania Erndt; (4) Erika Behres who married Franz Burkhard and they had: (5) Peter Burckhard; (4) Hans Gunther Behres who married Ingrid Bauenhauser; and (4) Klaus Behres who married Petra Blank André Zwick (25 years old), wedded on 06/05/1794 with Anne Marie Ehret. André Zwick’s father is Jean Zwick. His mother is Marguerite Pfoh” (Sce.

From LDS microfilm #1815622 Phalsbourg, France, Catholic Church, baptisms 1680-1744, read by Dennis A. Swick, it had some of the same names as above. The impression given of Phalsbourg is it seems very Roman Catholic, as several records show a change over from Lutheran to Católica Romana Apostólica. Then several fathers names were not listed in the baptism of their children. Only the mother’s name appeared giving the impression that perhaps the fathers might be soldiers? From 1682 there is Jacobus Zwky. Names also found are Schvlick, Zuich and Jean Zwick of Luxembourg.

With Diane Duman Dunlap as a source, it appears that the Zwicks who are from the Sharpsburg, PA area have a connection with these German-French Zwicks as well. She writes, “(1) Francis Joseph ZWICK, Birth:11 Oct 1813; Death:14 May 1871, Sharpsburg, Allegheny, PA; Burial: St. Mary's Cemetery, Sharpshill , PA; Father: George ZWICK; Mother: Katherine (UNKNOWN) of Bavaria ; Spouse: Anna Maria SCHNEIDER of Lorraine; Birth: 23 Feb 1826, Montbronn,Moselle, Lorraine, France. Witnesses: Jacob ELSENSOHN and Anthony KONRAD ( rootsweb.com/~njm1/marriage.htm).Her death: 4 Mar 1904, Sharpsburg, Allegheny, PA; Father: Johannes SCHNEIDER (1787-1873) born in Moselle, Lorraine, France; Mother: Anne Marie SEMLE (1792-) born in Montbronn, Moselle, Lorraine, France; Marriage: 21 Oct 1844, St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, Glenshaw, Allegheny Co., PA. Francis Joseph Zwick came to Sharpsburg with his spouse Anna Marie, in the early part of the 19th century, from the Alsace - Lorraine area - according to varios family documents”.

Diane Duman Dunlap writes,“Frances Joseph Zwick is the father of my ancestor Magdalena ZWICK LANG”. It is of interest to note that on LDS microfilm #750042 – Ev.Church of Ruprechtsau, Strassburg, France 1604-1705, read by Dennis A. Swick, there were no Zwicks seen but there was:1695- Anna Margaretha Lang. This is interesting because the last name LANG is found in Strasbourg, France some 118 years before Frances Joseph Zwick was born so there might be a connection between these two last names. According to Diane Dunlap and Mary McDonough, Frances Joseph Zwick was born 10/11/1813.

Looking at LDS FamilySearch.org, IGI has:FRANZ JOSEPH ZWICK - International Genealogical Index / GE, Gender: Male Christening: 23 JAN 1831 Sankt Vitus Katholisch, Ellwangen, Jagstkreis, Wüerttemberg. On LDS microfilm #898070, read by Dennis A. Swick, of the Catholic Church, Sankt Vitus, Ellwangen (Wüerttemberg, Baden), Germany, 1823-1858, it has:1829- Barbara Zwit, father: Georg Zwit; 1831-F. Joseph Zwick, parents: Georg Zwick and Josefa Fuchs, padrinos: Joseph Zwick with Rastalh and Barbara Fuchs; and 1832- Anton Zwick, parents: Georg Zwick and Josepha Fuchs, padrina: Barbara Fuchs. The LDS FamilySeacrh.org is correct in what it has of Georg Zwick being the father of Francis Joseph Zwick, but the mother’s are different, Katherine of Bavaria is not Josepha Fuchs, so this is possible that it is another Francis Joseph Zwick.

Now Mary McDonough writes, “First, from the records of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Pine Creek [known today as Glenshaw] PA: "On October 21, 1844, Fr. Jos. Zwick son of Georg Zwick and Catherina, born in Bavaria Rhen., married Anna Maria Schneider, born Löthringa."Löthringa is really Löthringen which is Lorraine in French and there were Zwicks from here already mentioned, ie. Juliana Zwick, b. 1777 in Löthringen. Then Mary states,“From the records of St. Philomena Church, Strip District, Pittsburgh: "Margaret born March 13 and baptized March 16, 1851. Parents: Joseph Zwick, born Bavaria, Klingenpetz, and Anna Maria Schneider, born Lötharingen, Erlenbach.” The name Klingenpetz should be Klingenthal.

Next Mary McDonough writes, “The records of the last 5 children (of Frances Joseph Zwick and Anna Maria Schneider) show that Joseph was from:Brüchweiler, Bavaria”. The closest names that Dennis A. Swick has seen of the Catholic Church in Brüchweiler, Germany are: Franz Joseph Zwick, b. 26 April 1810 in Brüchweiler, son of Wendelin Zwick and Elizabeth Steigner (Source: Barbara Schwitzgebel) and Francis Joseph Zwick, b. 18 December 1842 in Bavaria, Germany, son of Michael Zwick and Catharine Burkhardt, married Mary Schoeppner and later Margarett. Mary was born 12/20/1847 and married 11/6/1867 in Fulda, Noble, OH (Source: Barbara Schwitzgebel and Eugene Smith). Plus in the list of Zwicks of Barbara Schwitzgebel are: Josef Zwick, b. 1840 married Apollonia Nöel, son of George Zwick and Anna Peters in Búkin; and Magdalena Zwick married Frances Jacob Singer in 1834, daughter of Francis Zwick and Mary Erhardt. But there is no Frances Joseph Zwick, b. 1813 son of Georg Zwick and Catherina that is recorded in Brüchweiler. In Ellwangen, Germany there is a Frances Joseph Zwick, but he was born in 1831 to Georg Zwick and Josepha Fuchs. So these dates are not right and more research has to be done.

From it has Anna Marie’s parents as Jean Schneider and Annie Marie Semle who married on 4/29/1811 in Montbronn, Moselle, Lorraine, France. (1) Francois Schneider (1753-1817) and Anne Ferstler (1758-1848). Their children were: (2) Barbara Schneider; (2) Mary Anne Schneider; (2) Johan Nicolas Schneider; (2) Joseph Schneider; (2) Marguerite Schneider; (2) Jean Schneider who married Annie Marie Semle; (2) Nicolas Schneider; (2) Anna Maria Schneider; (2) Catharina Schneider; (2) Maria Margaret Scheider; and (2) Magdalena Schneider.

The children of: (1) Francis Joseph Zwick (1813) and Anna Marie Schneider were born in Allegheny, Pa. Diane Duman Dunlap lists them as: (2) John N. Zwick born on 20 May 1847. John N. died on 9 Aug 1910; he was 63 ; (2) Barbara Zwick (1849-1882); (2) Margaret Zwick (1851-1917); (2) Joseph Zwick (1853-); (2) Magdalena Zwick (1854-1928) married Peter Lang. Peter LANG was born on 11 Sep 1852 in Louis County, NY. Peter died in Sharpsburg, Allegheny, PA, on 6 Oct 1926; he was 74. He was buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Sharpshill, PA. On 6 Jun 1876 when Peter was 23, he married Magdalena ZWICK, daughter of Francis Joseph ZWICK (ZWIK OR SWICK) & Anna Maria SCHNEIDER, in Sharpsburgh, Allegheny, PA. Born on 22 Dec 1854 in Sharpsburg, Allegheny, PA.Magdalena died in Sharpsburg, Allegheny, PA, on 2 Feb 1928; she was 73. Buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Sharpshill , PA. Their children were: (3)Joseph G. Lang (1877-1928) - later married Theresa ?; (3)Leo Edward Lang (1879-1954) - later md Dorthea BLANK; (3) George J. Lang (1881-1952) - later married Mary R. WALZER; (3)Anna Lang (1883-1948) - later married Valentine ROTH; (3)Elizabeth Lang (1885-1941) - later married Jacob BERNER; (3)Albert C.Lang (1887-1951) - later married Dora WALZER; (3) Clara T. Lang (1889-1971); (3)Theodore J. Lang (1891-1967); (3)Madeline (Magdalena) Lang (1893-1978) - later married Joseph R. CROKE; (3)Marcella Mathilda Catherine Lang (1896-1951) - later married Matthew Thomas RUNT; and (3) Henrietta Lang (1898-1974) - later married Bernard H. RENGERS. Francis Joseph Zwick (Zwik) and Anna Maria Schneider next children were: (2) Barbara Philomena Zwick (1857-1911); (2) Alphonsus Zwick; (2) Anna Marie Zwick (1860-1896); (2) Elizabeth Zwick (1862-1916); (2) Alphons George (1864-1920); and (2) child Zwick (Source: Diane Duman Dunlap).

One of their daughters was named Magdalena Zwick. Diane Duman Dunlap writes, “On 6 Jun 1876 when Peter Lang was 23, he married Magdalena Zwick, daughter of Francis Joseph Zwick (ZWIK OR SWICK) & Anna Maria Schneider, in Sharpsburgh, Allegheny, PA. Born on 22 Dec 1854 in Sharpsburg, Allegheny, PA.Magdalena died in Sharpsburg, Allegheny, PA, on 2 Feb 1928; she was 73. Buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Sharpshill , Penn. They had the following children: (2)Joseph G. Lang (1877-1928) married Theresa; (2) Leo Edward Lang (1879-1954) married Dorthea BLANK; (2) George J. Lang (1881-1952) married Mary R. WALZER; (2) Anna Lang (1883-1948) - later married Valentine ROTH; (2) Elizabeth Lang (1885-1941) - later married Jacob BERNER; (2). Albert C. CROKE; (2).Marcella Mathilda Catherine Lang (1896-1951) married Matthew Thomas RUNT; and (2)Henrietta Lang (1898-1974) married Bernard H. RENGERS.”
