Pilsen – the European Capital of Culture 2015
The European Capital of Culture is a prestigious title awarded annually by the European Committee to two thoroughly selected cities in Europe. In 2013, it was Marseille together with the Slovak city of Košice, and in 2015, the title will belong to Pilsen (Czech Republic) and Mons (Belgium).
All over the year, the city of Pilsen will offer over 50 grand cultural events on public spaces and over 600 other events. In terms of genre, the programme will cover theatres, music, exhibitions, architecture, dance, performances, art installations as well as community programmes and education projects. The visitors of the city of Pilsen can look forward to the all-year-round season of a new circus, nine weeks of baroque or monumental celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the ending of the World War II.
A transformation of the city of Pilsen into a European cultural metropolis will start in Autumn 2014, when the magic Manège Carré Senar by François Delarozière, an artist who created a range of giant puppets walking down the streets of cities for the Paris theatre society Royal de Luxe, will drop anchor in the city centre.

Map of access route

We are looking forward to your visit

Welcome to Down Under. Wander around the newly created seasonal path counting 29 habitats. You can walk through the continent since its creation up to the present. You will meet 9 species of kangaroos, over 50 species of birds, other 15 species of mammals, 410 species of plants, cathedral mounds and mounds of “compass”, the Devils Marbles or a farm with Suffolk sheep, a short-beaked echidna and wild dingos.

The green colour will guide you from the pampas through Patagonia coastal areas to the centre of tropical forests. There, you can meet lamas, wolves, peccaries, ring-tailed coatis, capybaras, penguins, flamingos, southern screamers, aras, many callitrichidaes, rock cavies, armadillos, vampires or piranhas. Newly, the exhibit is completed by an aviary for condors, striated caracaras and by a Churuatas, a dwelling of rain forest Indians.

The Palearctic offers mountain areas of the Himalayas with a panda bear, snow leopards or gorals, Mongolian steppes with camels, kulans, kiangs, tigers and even bears. A village from the Iron Age is unusual with its wolves, and the Lüftnerka farmhouse is very popular with its domestic animals, a blacksmith’s workshop and a period apartment. Go and see otters, catfishes or burbots in the Czech river. The Asian Garden or the “Life in the Underground” is waiting for you. Also, the northern part of Africa is also blue, and there you can meet lions and many other North African rodents.

In Asia, you can experience rhinoceroses and other ungulates for the first time in the history of the garden. There are macaques in the residues of Indian forests, the Vietnamese lowland forests are inhabited by gibbons. The disappearing Philippines’ nature is remained by exhibits in the rhinoceroses’ pavilion. Birds and small mammals complement the exhibits in hexagonal buildings with outdoor aviaries. Island residents are mainly represented by comodo dragons and other rare reptiles.

Africa is the richest continent. Discover its mysterious diurnal and nocturnal life, travel to the island of Madagascar or to a part of the Arabian Peninsula. Giraffes are the largest, spiny mice are the most numerous, cheetahs are the quickest, vipers are the most venomous, and lemurs are the rarest inhabitants. Chameleons are masters in changing colours. You can even meet the Pygmy peoples and the Maasai people.

The North America exhibit is represented by muskoxen, prairie dogs; and by chamoises, sheep and lynxes in the mountain forests. The life in one of the hottest and biggest deserts is shown in the Sonoran Desert biotope. You can be surprised by a rattlesnake, a gila monster, owls, buzzards and many others.

Come with us to discover, learn and admire…
