President’s Report

2009-2010

The members of the Prince George’s County Area can report in the following areas for the 2009-2010 club year:

Public Relations

  • The members participated in the Bowie International Festival (Bowie Fest) in October. We provided activities for children and passed out literature about Zonta and about the club.
  • Celebrated the club’s 25th Anniversary with an evening affair. One of the members was able to get a social columnist to attend and photograph the event. The setting included story boards of the club’s beginnings. In attendance were our District Governor, Ellen Karo, our Area Director, Marta Calderon, and our County’s First Lady, Ms. Leslie Johnson. We received proclamations from Congressman Steny Hoyer, Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Thomas V. Mike Miller, President of the Maryland Senate, Jack B. Johnson, Pince George’s County Executive, Marilyn Bland, Prince George’s County Council Chairperson and Ingrid Turner, Council Member. Special gifts were presented to the past club presidents.

Membership

  • We undertook several activities to help recruit new members—the annual ZING, a table/booth at community activities, each one bring one, and a referral from another Zonta club.
  • Annual ‘White Elephant’ activity in December where each member brought a gift and the club’s signature memento was passed along to decorate a member’s home for the remainder of that club year; only to be brought back to following year’s ‘White Elephant’.
  • Held our annual planning retreat.

Service

  • Members brought family toiletries, children’s games, crafts and educational supplies that were wrapped and donated during the holiday to the Family Crisis Center, a shelter for children and women who experienced domestic violence.
  • Made a second delivery to the Family Crisis Center in March
  • Made deliveries of clothing and household items to the Greater Lighthouse Church Bargain Room which the residents of the Family Crisis Center could purchase through a voucher system.
  • Donated to the Once a Month program on two separate occasions
