Zone Presale Forestry Technician, GS-462-07 PSE 18/8
Hood River and Barlow Ranger Districts

The Mt. Hood National Forest will soon be filling a zone presale forestry technician position at the GS-462-07, PSE 18/8 (Permanent Seasonal Employee) level. In an 18/ 8 PSE position the selected candidate would work under a full time schedule (40 hours + / week) for a minimum of 18 pay periods (36 weeks) and be placed in non-pay status for 8 pay periods (16 weeks) of each year. The incumbent will be assigned to a duty station of either Parkdale or Dufur, Oregon.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
This position serves as the lead for the eastside zone presale crew, which generally consists of three or more employees. The eastside zone is made up of the Hood River and Barlow Ranger Districts on the Mt. Hood National Forest. The duties of this position will be focused on the eastside zone; however, the incumbent may perform work anywhere on the Forest with the potential for overnight travel. Responsibilities include distributing workload among presale crewmembers and reporting progress on assigned tasks. The incumbent instructs employees in specific pre-sale related tasks giving on-the-job training, checking working conditions and ensuring work is done safely.
Specific duties include:
· Timber sale and Stewardship unit layout;
· Designating timber (marking);
· Volume determination (cruising);
· Provides field instruction to crew members with respect to sale layout and cruising;
· Preparing maps utilizing GIS/GPS software and hardware;
· Providing technical assistance in the implementation of standard logging plans; and
· Identifying preliminary road locations to facilitate logging operations.
ABOUT THE FOREST:
Located twenty miles east of the city of Portland, Oregon, and the northern Willamette River valley, the Mt. Hood National Forest extends south from the beautiful Columbia River Gorge across more than sixty miles of forested mountains, lakes and streams to Olallie Scenic Area, a high lake basin under the slopes of Mt. Jefferson. The Forest encompasses some 1,067,043 acres surrounding the 11,235 foot peak of its namesake, Mt. Hood.
The Mt. Hood National Forest is the “backyard” playground for the Portland, OR metropolitan area with a population of nearly 2.1 million people. The Forest hosts about 4.5 million visitors a year who come to enjoy fishing, camping, boating and hiking in the summer; hunting in the fall; and skiing and other snow sports in the winter. About 2 million people each year visit the National Historic Landmark Timberline Lodge, built in 1937. Other popular destinations on the Forest include Lost Lake, Trillium Lake, Timothy Lake, Rock Creek Reservoir and portions of the Old Oregon Trail, including the Barlow Road. There are approximately 314,078 acres of designated wilderness on the Forest, in eight separate wilderness areas. The largest is the Mt. ABOUT THE COMMUNITIES:
Dufur (Home to the Barlow Ranger District Office) is a small, friendly community of about 600 people located off Highway 197, approximately 13 miles south of The Dalles, Oregon. Situated in the rolling wheat fields east of Mt. Hood, the town is centrally located offering outstanding fishing opportunities on both the Deschutes and Columbia Rivers. The town has a grocery store, post office, several churches, Pastime Tavern, WE3 Deli and historic Balch Hotel. The K through 12 public school is actively supported by the local community and offers an excellent educational opportunity. The town hosts the Dufur Threshing Bee and Region 6 renowned Barlow softball tournament. The city park has tent and trailer campsites as well a baseball field and swimming pool.

The Dalles is a larger community with a population of about 12,000 people. Along with all the typical services of a moderate sized city, there is also a highly recognized Celilo Cancer Center, a Veteran’s Hospital, The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center (Wasco County museum and interpretive facility), The Dalles Chamber of Commerce (www.thedalleschamber.com), wind surfing facilities, and two recently restored historic buildings, the Granada Theatre and the Civic Auditorium. Ample medical care facilities as well as dental and optical services are available. Attractions nearby include Fort Dalles Museum, Oregon Trail markers and Mary Hill Museum of Art and Stonehenge.
Wasco County includes the communities of Boyd, Pine Hollow, Wamic and Pine Grove and the cities of The Dalles, Mosier, Dufur and Maupin. Housing is available throughout the area, with the average 3 bedroom home cost of $190,000.00. Rental units vary from $350.00 to $800.00/month.
Mt. Hood / Parkdale (Home to the Hood River District Office) is a small community located 15 miles south of Hood River, OR and approximately 75 miles southeast of Portland (the largest city in Oregon). Mt. Hood / Parkdale has a grocery store, post office, two convenience stores, an elementary school, several churches, two community centers, a gas station, brewpub, several restaurants, and several gift / artisan shops. The community is a mix of tourism and orchard based industry. Housing is limited.
Hood River is a full service community. Local services include 33 churches, public library, hospital, motels / hotels, banks, local shops, two grocery stores, three pharmacy / department stores, brewpubs, restaurants, fresh fruit stands, movie theaters, sports / health clubs, swimming pool, tennis courts, parks, bowling alley, gardening outlets, and a small municipal airport. Ample medical care facilities as well as dental and optical services are available. The City of Hood River remains the Gorge capital for the sport of windsurfing.
Hood River County encompasses the Hood River Valley and includes the communities of Mt. Hood, Parkdale, Dee, Odell, Pine Grove and the cities of Hood River, and Cascade Locks. Mt. Hood, with an elevation of 11,235 ft., marks the southern end of the valley. The Columbia River and a view of Mt. Adams mark the northern end.

Housing is available throughout the Hood River Valley, with the average 3 bedroom home costing $250,000 and up. Rental units vary from $500.00/month (for a one-bedroom apt) to $1,100.00 - $1,500 for a house. Rentals are somewhat limited during the summer months.
