Move’in and Zone’in Workshops for First Nations Schools

FNESC/FNSA have purchased the Move’in and Zone’in programs for each school. In addition, 5 workshops have been organized in order to train staff in the use of the programs. Details of the training sessions are outlined below.

Sensory Tools and Techniques for Responsible Learning (9am – 12pm)

Harnessing Energy raises awareness regarding the reasons why Today’s Children are unable to pay attention and learn, and offers The Zone’in Concept to improve self-responsibility and empower learning.

Objectives

  • Explain the sensory integration and body energy, and howand why Today’s Child needs to move to learn.
  • Review the latest research on sensory integration, motor coordination and attachment development, and the impact of technology on children’s behavior and ability to learn in the classroom.
  • Implement the Sensory Observation and Strategy Tool to teachchildren self-regulating attention strategies.
  • Explore the new Zone’in Program, Zone-O-Meters, and experience loads of classroom and home based tools and techniques to get kids Zone’in to Learn!

The Zone’in Program optimizes attention by helping children to understand more about their body energy. If their energy is charged and hyperactive, or sleepy and zoned out, they can’t start, sustain or finish activities. By watching the Zone’in DVD, and using a Zone-O-Meter, tools and techniques, children learn to “Switch On” to get “Zone’in and Learn!”

Printing Skills - The Forgotten Foundation for Literacy (1pm to 4pm)

Back to Basics raises awareness regarding the reasons why we still need to teach printing, and offers schools, government and university suggestions and initiatives on how to ease the job of printing and reading for all children.

Objectives

  • Explain how the fine motor systems of the eyes and hands develop, and how and why every child should be taught to print.
  • Review the latest research about literacy and printing instruction techniques, and learn about the impact of technology on the development of children’s fine motor systems.
  • Implement the Fine Motor Observation and Strategy Tool, the Printing Basics Guide, the Foundation Scale.
  • Explore the new Move’in Program, and experience loads of classroom and home based tools and techniques to get kids Move’in to Print!

The Move’in Program improves printing and reading by providingan assessment and intervention in the form of a board game, played in school or at home. Move’incomes with a web-based computer program that allows children to create their own custom journal and worksheets, and database for progress tracking and reports.

Presenter: Cris Rowan

Occupational Therapist and Pediatric Sensory Specialistis a well-known speaker and author in the field of sensory integration, fine motor skills and the detrimental impact of TV and videogames on children’s development. Cris has created Zone’in and Move’in Education Programs for school and home use and is currently completing her book A Cracked Foundation: Repairing the Damaging Effects of Technology on the Developing Child.
