1.  Characteristics of RTU Daugavpils branch

1.1.  Foundation, aims

Riga Technical university’s Daugavpils branch (till 1994 - RPI Daugavpils Polytechnic faculty, till 2002 - RTU learning-scientific center,) was founded in 1961 year. Till 1992 specialists were trained in three profiles: mechanics, heat-power engineering and building, now students are trained in five profiles: mechanical engineering, electrical power engineering, building, economics and computer science.

RTU Daugavpils branch’s aim is to give possibility for starting higher technical education in Latgale region. According to the learning educational plans the branch provides compulsory and alternative courses in the following programme groups of the day department: mechanics, building, electrical science, computer science and economics from the first to the second year including. By RTU Senate decision other programmes realization can be started in the branch.

RTU Daugavpils branch works according to RTU Constitution: the branch is RTU’s independent department. The branch can be founded and liquidated by Senate decision. Branch’s task is to provide possibility for Latvia district’s inhabitants to study choosing day, evening or extra-mural learning forms with Senate decision determined academic and professional learning programmes in Senate approved volume.

1.2.  Implementation of the programme

In RTU Daugavpils branch RTU licensed and accredited learning programmes are implemented, subjects’ working programmes are conformed with responsible professors of corresponding RTU departments and groups of professors who give to the branch professors permission for subject teaching.

On the branch’s first years higher education’s basic knowledge is given, but further specialization and bachelor’s work presentation take place on the corresponding faculties in Riga. After the day department’s second year graduation students continue learning on the corresponding Technical university faculty in Riga and there they receive higher education (one year study to receive the bachelor’s degree, but then continue learning in the magistracy, which lasts two years, or receive two years engineer’s diploma). Extra-mural department’s students continue learning in Riga after the third year graduation. During branch’s existence approximately 5000 specialists were trained, the most part of them work in several Latgale’s district establishments and organizations.

1.4.  Characteristics of RTU staff

From 1971 till 1991 on the base of our branch International mechanics scientific summer school was organized (the head of the school’s organizational committee – academician E.Lavendelis, learned secretary – professor M.Zakrževskis, the head of the working group– associate professor J.Ivanovs), in which leading scientists from many Russian, Ukrainian, Byelorussian, Georgian, Kazakhstan and other countries’ high schools took part. These schools supported our faculty’s scientific potential development. Assoc. professor J.Vasiljevs, assoc. professor R.Osipova, assoc. professor J.Ivanovs, assoc. professor V.Kuģelevičs, V.Golubevs, assoc. professor F.Turonoks, assoc. professor G.Strautmanis, assoc. professor J.Oļehno, assoc. professor R. Stankevičs, assoc. professor A.Stepanovs, J.Krjukovs, assoc. professor O.Kondruse, assoc. professor R.Smirnova, lecturer I.Schukins graduated from RTU and other high schools’ graduate courses and successfully presented dissertations for the scientific candidate’s degree, which is equal to engineering doctor’s scientific degree.

16 staff lecturers provide learning process on the day and extra-mural departments, 8 from them received scientific doctor’s degree, 3 hour-lecturers and 20 teaching and support personal staff. Several of our branch employees raise their qualification on the doctor’s courses and in the magistracy (J.Stashane, V.Miglans, I.Kolomeichuka, S.Stashane, A.Grigorjevs).

2.  Students of the professional study programme „Car and machine building” (DMCNO)

This academic year on the RTU DF day department 189 students of the first two years and 223 extra-mural department’s students of the three years are studying.

10 budget study places were planned for the students of the study programme „Car and machine building” (DMCNO) implemented at Daugavpils branch of RTU, but due to great demand for this programme, one more budget place was allocated to our university. Thus, in 2007-2008 study years Daugavpils branch of RTU matriculated 11 students who currently study this programme.
