2015-2016 Syllabus

Course description:

The YWCPA Rosebud Choir is designed to teach the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills through rehearsal and performance. Students develop aesthetic and cultural awareness through exploration, leading to creative expression. Creativity, encouraged through the study of the fine arts, is essential to nurture and develop the whole child.

The Foundations of Music:

-Music literacy (Learning to read music)

-Creative expression (Performances and Presentations)

-Historical and cultural relevance (Music History)

-Critical evaluation and response (Music Appreciation)

Ms. Hatter’s Classroom Rules

1. Be on time and in your seat when the bell rings.

2. Respect the people, equipment, and furnishings of YWCPA.

  1. Any radios, cameras, electronic games, etc must be left at home. Cell Phones must be concealed at all times.
  2. Keep food, drink, and gum OUT of the classroom.

3. Bring a pencil to class every day.

4. Be in dress code!

Classroom management procedures

1. Verbal Warning

2. Teacher/Student Conference -Student completes an Action Plan (possible demerit)

3. Parent/Guardian Phone Call (possible demerit)

4. Referral to School Administrator

Choir student expectations:

  1. Participate everyday
  2. Be organized
  3. Help keep the choir room clean and orderly
  4. Sing!

Materials:

  • Black 1" binder
  • Pencils
  • Composition Notebook
  • Concert dress – A-line knee length to mid-calf length. All black, sleeves preferred or with a black sweater/cardigan. No designs or other colors. (See additional dress letter)
  • Flat black shoes or character shoes. They can be the ones that you wear to school. Character shoes have a low heel and can be purchased online, but are not required.
  • Black tights or stockings. These can be the tights that are worn in cold weather according to the YWCPA dress code.

Class activities and grading policy:

  • Major Tests/Exams: Performances (HISD & UIL Solo/Ensemble; HISD Beginning Choir Festival) and Music Literacy Tests
  • Quizzes: Song Quizzes - Demonstrates knowledge of the music we will be performing. This may be done solo or in sections.

Listening quizzes: Each week students will be learning to identify new music from a variety of genres. This includes knowing the name of the piece, the composer and other basic information about the piece.

Song Quizzes: Students will be assessed on if they have the melody/words of a song learned/memorized. These quizzes may be unannounced.

  • Homework: Practice your music & learn the information about composers & listening assignments.
  • Projects: Musician/composer projects, Composition projects.
  • Participation: Paying attention between songs, keeping the choir binder organized, helping keep the choir room clean by putting items away neatly and following directions.
  • Classwork: Active participation in warm-ups, singing songs, some music theory or history discussion.

Advanced Choir Opportunities

Advanced choir students/students who have participated in advanced choirs previously will have the opportunity to audition for community choirs such as TMEA Region Choir, Treble Choir, and performances with the Rose Choir (HS) during off-campus performances.

A performance schedule will be posted in the HUB, on the School wires page and on my classroom blog hatterita.edublogs.org.

ALL PERFORMANCES ARE REQUIRED AND A PART OF THE GRADE. PERFORANCES ARE INCLUDED IN THE TEKS FOR MUSIC-FINE ARTS. An alternate Assignment may be assigned with prior parent notice under conditions that would be considered an excused absence by the school with a penalty of 30 points at the discretion of the choir director. Keep in mind that performance is a test grade and failure to perform will result in a failing grade.
