Youthful Ensemble Bringing High Intensity Performance
WHITEWATER – Young Auditorium is pleased to bring the music and remarkable interpretive power of The Ariel Quartet to Whitewater on Tuesday, October 7th at 7:30 p.m. The Ariel Quartet performs widely in Israel, Europe, and North America, and continues to astonish with its performances of complete classical works by memory.
A “soundbites” event is also scheduled to begin around 6:30 p.m. the same night of the show. Soundbites are complimentary, optional, pre-show discussions pertaining to the event and held in the Young Auditorium Main Lobby. A member of the production will sit and visit with guests, adding insight and answering questions about the performance. An assortment of desserts and beverages are also available for purchase during this time.
The Ariel Quartet musicians are Gershon Gerchikov and Alexandra Kazovsky (violins), Jan Grüning (viola), and Amit Even-Tov (cello). Their program will be filled with great compositions, such as Haydn’s Quartet in G Major-Op. 76 No. 1, Schumann’s Quartet in F Major-Op. 41 No. 2, and Ravel’s Quartet in F Major.

Distinguished by its youth, brilliant playing, and soulful interpretations, The Ariel Quartet has quickly earned a glowing international reputation. Serendipitously grouped together as a student ensemble when they were 12 years old, the Ariel fell in love together with chamber music – the challenge, repertoire, and all-encompassing experience of becoming a string quartet. By the time the Quartet finished high school, they were already performing on a regular basis throughout Israel and began expanding their activities with festivals, competitions, and concerts around the world.
In the winter of 2003, the Quartet won first prize at the Franz Schubert Competition in Graz, Austria. After Graz, the Quartet came to the United States to study at the New England Conservatory and the Perlman Music Program, both catalysts in the growth of this stunning ensemble. At the Perlman Music Program, the Quartet met the legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman, who has since become a champion of and mentor to the Quartet.
The New York Times review of their performance raves, “…In the encore (in which the group played from memory), sweetness and harshness, energy and restraint, were finally in perfect balance. There was a sense of arrival and transformation as the theme returned near the end, the test of a good performance of this repertory…the group has a gift for filling the pristine structures of Classicism with fire.” None of the performers are over age 30, and they play with raw enthusiasm and fervor.
Tickets are $22.00 for this performance ($9.25 for UW-Whitewater students). Tickets for any show can be purchased online, by calling the Box Office at (262) 472-2222, or in person. New this year, tickets that are purchased online can also be printed at home. The Greenhill Center of the Arts Box Office is located inside the UW-Whitewater Center of the Arts building near Barnett Theatre on the UW-Whitewater Campus (930 West Main Street in Whitewater).
