Youth in Action Programme

Youth exchange “Different but together”

7th - 15th of March 2010 in Valcea County, Romania

As a recent study proves, all types of discrimination are seen as wide spread in the national setting: 62% of Europeans believe that people regularly suffer discrimination based on a person’s race or ethnic origin, 51% think discrimination because of sexual orientation is wide spread in today’s society and 36% of Europeans think the same is true about gender based discrimination. The comfort with the idea of a member of a minority group as a neighbor, differs (Europeans are more comfortable with a neighbor that has a different religion or is a disabled person than to a homosexual or a Roma) but it show a stereotype based conduct. Discrimination is still a part of Europe’s inhabitants life, is still a problem for us, all. As we live in a big and diverse society the behavior of everyone towards others counts.

The basic aims of our project derive from all these “European numbers” and are represented by promoting personal responsibility against prejudice, reducing the number of persons that have a discriminating way of thinking and raise consciousness and understanding through interactive methods that create a learning environment from equal to equal.

Based on the principle that young people deliver a more efficient message to their peers, the activities challenge stereotypes and are interactive, experiential, connected with the idea of intercultural learning: starting from ourselves, lookingto the small group, to a bigger one and then understanding a multinational construct are strongly.

Sharing experiences and thoughts, listening actively, emotional and intellectual implication in the workshops are our expectations from the participants. The results we are waiting to be visible at in individual but also to the interpersonal level.

As a part of the intercultural learning we would like to lean more from each other’s traditions so during the 8 days of we reserved some special activities for it, such as: cooking specific food, sharing some of our customs, visiting a traditional fair…
