SAI Vision is Our MissionJanuary 2, 2007

Divinity Transforming Humanity

Scene 0- VEDAS (2 minutes)

Opening Narration/RAM – to be narrated in English and Telugu before the play starts (1 minute)

Om Sri Sai Ram.

In ages gone by, when evil tendencies were present in a few individuals, the Lord destroyed them to restore Human Values in society.

But at present, when negative tendencies are so wide-spread, how can they be controlled? We show how the Divine Mission is unique, suited to each age and time.

Let us meet a boy in Canada, about to play a game of ice hockey with his friends. Much like how the game of cricket is hugely popular here, the sport of ice hockey is a national obsession in Canada.

Our Dearest Swami, we the students of the Sri Sathya Sai Centre of Ottawa, from the capital city of Canada, lovingly offer at your Lotus Feet this drama titled “Divinity Transforming Humanity”.

Memu Ottawa SSE vidyarthulamu mee pada padmamulaku…

Telugu version yet to be finalized

Scene 1 – Hockey Game in OttawaCanada (1 minute)

Role / Dialogue / Notes for Coaches/Coordinators
Narrator /Ram / Set-up the props
Senator’s player I/Keshav G / Ok guys, listen up. You go down the left, I’ll go down the centre and pass to you. / Eight boys in hockey gear; four per team. One of the boys in goalie gear and mask.
Scene opens with boys skating back and forth with hockey sticks and a foam puck and a single hockey net. One boy will be in a goalie mask, rest in regular gear.
Senator’s player II/Keshav D / Sounds good, I’ll find an opening and try to score! / Background music – hockey game, ‘swish’ sounds of skating, shooting, whatever gives an atmosphere of a hockey arena.
Two teams skate back and froth for ½ minute.
Senator’s player II/ Keshav D / Good. You two go down this side (pointing to the right side). Got it?
(Everyone nods) LET’S GO! / To the other two boys on his team
Maple Leafs goalie/Sameer / Hey, watch it! / After two or three fast skating rallies back and forth, the goalie rushes one of the boys and pushes him.
Choreograph this part so that child sets out to score and is in proximity to goalie.
Senator’s player II/ Keshav D / What did I do?
Maple Leafs
Goalie/Sameer / What’s your problem? / Angry, bullying
Comes close to child and shoves him
Senator’s player I/Keshav G / Oww, don’t hit me!
Senator’s player I, II and III/ Keshav D, Keshav G and Prasanth / Stop! Hey stop! What are you doing? / The boy tries to protect himself, but is repeatedly pushed by the goalie and falls to the ground.
Senator’s goalie/Puthiran / I’ll show you. / ther boys gesture to the goalie to stop. But the goalie continues to push and kick the child.
Senator’s player I/Keshav G / Hey, break it up. Let’s take a 10-minute break guys. / Separates goalie and other boys.
Goalie and other players walk away, while boy on the ground is in pain.
As they leave, the boy slowly gets up and walks to the other side where his mother is.

Scene 2 – RAMA Avatar (4 minutes)

Narrator/Ram / After he was bullied in the ice hockey game, the boy went home to his mother. / There should be a lot of walking back and forth on the stage, child doesn’t want to talk about what happened at the hockey game, and avoids his mother, but the mother is persistent and tries to follow him.
Mother/
Sonya / (Anxious) Son, what happened? You don’t look well. / Spotlight on mother and child
Prop changes happen
Child/ Prashanth / (Grimacing) Uhh, it’s nothing maa, just a hockey game.
Mother/Sonya / (Concerned) Let me see? Are you in pain? / Goes in front of him, looks at his face
Child/ Prashanth / (Hesitates) A little. My arm hurts here… and here…
Mother/Sonya / Oh Dear! (pause) Did you get into a fight?
Child/ Prashanth / Yes mother. It was the goalie! He beat me! He kicked me! So I left the game early.
Mother/Sonya / What? Let me see… / Patting him on the head, back
Child/ Prashanth / Ahh. It hurts. I didn’t hit back, Maa. Should I have?
Mother/Sonya / Oh my son, you should be strong with such people. Be strong, but don’t be violent.
Child/ Prashanth / How? How should I be strong mother?
Mother/Sonya / (Puts hand on shoulder) Come, I’ll tell you. Bad people have always been there, even ages ago. Thousands of years ago, there was evil in the form of Ravana. At that time, Lord Rama stood strong against evil and established truth and righteousness. / At this time the dance girls come on stage. Mother, and child walk to the front, side.
As above line is ending, scene’s music should fade out and Rama song should fade in.
Mother and child are standing in the front, with the mother pointing to Rama, Sita etc. and nodding at the child.

RAMA Avatar Through Dance

Scene 3 – KRISHNA Avatar (2 minutes)

Narrator/Ram / In Lord Rama’s time, good and evil lived in separate cities. But in Dwapara Yuga, evil and good were in the same city. So, the virtuous Pandavas and the evil Kauravas lived close together, and so did the evil Kamsa and the noble Vasudeva. (pause) To destroy evil, living so close to good, the Lord incarnated as Krishna. / Fade music in and out in accordance to Rama’s scene. And mother and child move to the front/ right
Mother/ Sonya / Son, Krishna killed many evil tyrants like Kamsa / As Mother is telling child"Son, Krishna killed many evil tyrants like Kamsa", Krishna and Kamsaare circling each other. After 2 circles, Krishna pulls down a flowing red scarf (chunni?) Kamsa is wearing, making him fall. Krishnaplaces foot on Kamsa.
Mother/ Sonya / Not only did Krishna kill many evil tyrants himself, he also guided the Pandavas, through the Bhagavad Gita, to do their duty and destroy thesinful Kauravas / As first part finishes, mother tells child "Not only did Krishna kill many evil tyrants himself, he also guided the Pandavas, through the Bhagavad Gita, to do their duty and destroy thesinful Kauravas." By then chariot is assembled and Krishna/Arjuna should take positions. 1 or 2 Gita verses will be sung, with translations if there is time

Scene 4 – SAI Avatar – SERVICE (6 minutes)

Child/ Prashanth / Mother, if Lord Krishna destroyed evil, why is there so much hatred and anger today? / Spotlight on mother and child: prop changes happen
Mother/Sonya / That is what happens when people forget the Lord’s example. Evil qualities have been creeping closer and closer to good ones. And today, good and bad are in the same person. / While child is talking, mother is nodding her head as if in anticipation for a question from the child.
Child/
Prashanth / Good and bad…in the same person?
Mother/Sonya / Yes! In the same person! That is why, it is not possible to destroy evil. Instead, evil has to be transformed into good.
Child / Transform? Who will do that?
Mother / (Pointing to Swami) Bhagawan Baba! His Mission is to transform individual as well as society. Come, let me tell you a story.
Scene 4.1
Narrator/Ram / In the 1950s, only a lucky few knew of Bhagawan Baba. Among them was an elderly lady who had started the first Sai centre in her city and was organizing seva activities. Let us go back in time, to the home of the elderly lady. / Old lady is sitting down in a chair, two other ladies enter, and are welcomed by the old lady.
She is engaged in worship, waiting for fellow Sai centre devotees to arrive.
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Sairam!
Lady I/ Sruthi / Sairam amma! How are you?
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Good, good. Come in, let’s sit down.
Lady I/ Sruthi / Amma! You look very happy
Lady II/ Pooja / (To lady 1) Of course! She just came back from Puttaparthi!
(to old lady) Did you have Our Beloved Swami’s Darshan?
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Yes, I returned only yesterday.
Lady II/ Pooja / You are so lucky! Tell us about your trip!
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Yes, yes, sit down. I told Swami about our Narayana seva project to feed the needy. He was very happy and said we should start immediately.
Lady I/ Sruthi / Oh really! Tell us what He said.
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Swami said, to put aside a handful of rice every day, collect it and distribute it to the needy regularly.
Lady II/ Pooja / Hmm…. Wonderful! Why notcollect rice from today itself?
Lady I/Sruthi / YES, I’ll do the same at home.
Narrator/ Ram / The ladies began Narayana seva as per Swami’s instructions. Over the next few months, they put aside rice in their homes, and used it to feed the needy. One day the elderly lady was home when a needy person arrived at the door.
Needy/ / Amma!. I have small children.. no food for 2 days.. help amma.
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Wait, wait, I have some rice.
Needy / Thank you amma!
Old lady/ Prashanthi / (to herself) Here is the narayan seva rice. I will give this. / Two containers can be seen. She looks at first one, then gestures “no ‘and closes it. She opens the 2nd one and gestures “yes”.
Narrator/
Ram / The lady tied the rice into a pouch, using a red cloth she had, and gave it to the needy person.
Needy/ / (bowing down) Amma, God bless you. Thank you.
Old lady/ Prashanthi / (smiles) Ok Ok, go now.
Scene 4.2
Narrator/ Ram / After a few months, the group doing Narayana seva met again. / Prop changes happen
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Sairam! How are you?
Lady I/
Sruthi / Sairam amma, we are fine. Amma, I went to Puttarparthi with my family and just returned.
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Oh very good! Tell me all about it! Here here, sit down.
Lady II/
Pooja / Did you talk to Swami?
Lady I/
Sruthi / Yes, we were very fortunate. Swami called us for an interview.
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Oh interview! You must tell us everything!
Lady I/
Sruthi / Swami spoke to everyone in the room! To us, he said many times, that feeding the needy is the noblest charity.
Lady II/
Pooja / Oh, how I wish that Swami would visit our centre and see our narayana seva work.
Lady I/
Sruthi / Ah..I had the same thought. I begged Swami many times, to Bless us by coming here.
Old lady/ Prashanthi / Really? What did he say?
Lady I/
Sruthi / He said “I have already come to your city.” But he added that HE was not happy.
Old lady/ Prashanthi / (confused) Ayyo! Why did He say He is not happy?
Lady I/ Sruthi / He said, you cook with five-rupees rice for your family, and keep aside two-rupees rice for seva. This is not good.
Old lady/ Prashanthi / (afraid) Ayyo, Sairam!
Lady I/ Sruthi / I said No Swami, we are not doing that.
Lady II/ Pooja / Then?
Lady I/ Sruthi / Swami gave me this red pouch of rice and said “Ask the centre devotees. One of them gave it to me.”
Old lady/ Prashanthi / (gets up and walks thoughtfully to one side) This is my pouch! What? Could that woman who I gave the rice have been Swami? I cannot believe it.
Replay of needy person’s voice… (as Old Lady walks thoughtfully)
Old lady/ Prashanthi / (falls to the ground, shaking, doing pranam) Swami! Paahi maam! What a mistake I made! Please forgive me.
Sai discourse excerpt / See ME in each person you serve. Only then, Manava seva becomes Madhava seva.
Mother/Sonya / You see, He transforms bad habits in a mere instant. Gold is melted, beaten and twisted, to become an ornament. A true Guru transforms bad qualities in the same way. This is Swami’s biggest miracle. / Saying this mother/child would walk to the side while Prof/Jai, Friend Friend II and I are already on stage, gesturing/chatting. Prop changes happen.

Scene 6- HOSPITAL –(10 minutes)

6.1: Classroom Environment
Narrator/Ram / Even today Swami, is patiently transforming thousands. For example, the medical field has been overtaken by greed for money. Swami is restoring the spirit of service in it through the Sri Sathya Sai Medical institutions. Let us hear a story of a boy named Jai from North India. Jai was a bright student in the first year of his BSc degree. He was well liked by his friends as well as teachers. / Prop changes happen
Amar/ Thananjai / Jai, you are a genius. We heard that you got 93% on this exam?
Professor/
Amirthan / Jai is a hard working student and has a great potential. Jai, Don’t stop at a bachelors, do a Masters or PhD!
Jai/
Mayyon / Yes, sir. I want to do a PhD.
Professor/ Amirthan / (Pats Jai) Good, good! Ok, now go and study.
(to the two boys) ..Especially you two! Your exams are coming up.
Jai/ Mayyon / (gathering his books) Yes, sir. Ok guys, want to walk home? (grimaces, holds head) Oh, what a bad headache!
Sunil/Sabaresan / (joking) Haha, you are working too hard! Leave your books, and let’s have some fun for a change.
Jai/ Mayyon / (holding head) No Amar, this is a really sharp pain. And I can’t see clearly! What is happening?
Professor/ Amirthan / (patting, holding) Jai, are you ok? Do you need help?
Jai/ Mayyon / (rubbing eyes) Sir, I cannot see! My eyes, I cannot see! (extending hands in front)
Professor/ Amirthan / Don’t worry, I’ll take you to the hospital.
(to Jai’s friends) Amar, go quickly and tell Jai’s parents. / Holds Jai’s hand
Prop change happens
Scene 6.2: PrivateHospital Environment
Narrator/Ram / Jai reached the hospital, which was an expensive private hospital in their city. They were seen by a specialist later that night.
Doctor/ Abijit / We did an MRI scan. Your son has a large brain tumor that is obstructing his optic nerves. / Studying charts, scans
Mother/
Chayyon / Tumor? Oh my God!! (faltering, then holding table, sitting down)
Doctor/
Abijit / He needs surgery right away, or he will lose his sight and it could be fatal.
Father/ Koghulan / How much will the operation cost?
Doctor/
Abijit / Arrange for ten lacs. Medicines, tests and the hospital stay will all add up.
Father/
Koghulan / (begging doctor) Ten lacs! Doctor, I am not a rich man. I don’t have so much money.
Doctor/
Abijit / (Irritated, arrogant) Please, I don’t have time for this. Arrange the money and come back. (walks out)
Narrator/Ram / The doctor left, leaving Jai and his parents to the dark future awaiting him.
Father/
Koghulan / (Dejected) Let us go. These people will not help us.
Mother/ Chayyon / (Worried, panicky) But my son! What will happen to my son? / (Father does not respond, slowly walks out as mother follows)
Jai/
Mayyon / Hold my hand, mother. I can’t see! (slowly walks out, following the father)
Scene 6.3: Jai’s House Environment
Narrator/Ram
/ In a few weeks, Jai’s eyesight was lost and had to stop college. They say that it is darkest just before daybreak. When Jai and his family were going through their darkest period, hope appeared in the form of Jai’s friends who came to visit one day. / Show Jai walking with a cane, with dark eyeglasses, with mother or father gesturing with worried expressions.
Prop changes happen.
Mother/
Chayyon / Oh Amar and Sunil. Jai was asking for you.
Amar/ Thananjai / Thank you, aunty.
(Walks up to Jai) Jai, how are you feeling?
Jai/ Mayyon / Hey I am so happy that you could come! Sit down. I’ve lost my eyesight, Amar. I am very worried. I don’t know who will take care of my family or me.
Sunil / Saberasan / Don’t give up hope! I think I know a way to help you.
Jai/Mayyon / What do you mean?
Amar/ Thananjai / Have you heard of the SriSathyaSaiHospital?
Jai/ Mayyon / What hospital?
Sunil / Saberasan / It’s a free hospital in Andhra Pradesh.
Jai/Mayyon / Oh, If it is free Amar, it must be a small clinic. I need brain surgery.
Sunil / Saberasan / No Jai, listen to us! My uncle was operated there and he has completely recovered. They do brain surgeries free of cost there!
Jai/ Mayyon / Really Amar? Is that true?
Mother/ Chayyon / Is that true, boys? Somehow I suddenly have hope. I will tell papa to find out.
Scene 6.4: SaiHospital Environment
Narrator/Ram
/ Jai’s parents found out about the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences. They made a trip to the hospital later that year. They were given an appointment with two neurosurgeons there. / Show two doctors holding up scans and discussing with each other.
Prop changes happen.
Doctor I/ Sathya / (Holding MRI) Please sit down. We have studied your son’s case history and the results of tests.
Doctor II/ Raghav / Your son’s tumor is affecting his optic nerves, and he will go blind if nothing is done.
Mother/ Chayyon / Please help him! Please!
Doctor I/ Sathya / Yes amma! We will perform surgery and remove the tumor.
Father/Koghulan / But what will it cost, doctor?
Doctor II/ Raghav / (gentle laugh) There is no cost. Sri Sathya Sai Baba has declared that medical care should not be a luxury only for the rich.
Doctor I/Sathya / There is no cost for surgery, the medicines, or the hospital stay.
Father/Koghulan / Doctor, are you sure? A private hospital wanted ten lacs for this surgery, and threw us out.
Doctor I/ Sathya / Yes, at one time we too were doctors in such hospitals. But in this hospital, medicine is not a business. Bhagawan Baba has directed us to perform all operations totally free of cost!
Narrator/Ram / Soon Jai was operated upon successfully by doctors in the SriSathyaSaiHospital.
Jai/ Mayyon / (sitting up in bed) Maa, I can see clearly in my right eye! / Mother and father look at each other with happiness while holding their son.
Mother/ Chayyon / Oh my son, I’m so happy!
Doctor I/ Sathya / That is very good, Jai. The operation is a success. How is your left eye? / Look at Jai’s eye and pat his head.
Jai/ Mayyon / Doctor, it is still blurry.
Doctor II/ Raghav / Don’t worry, Jai. Both your eyes will improve in a few weeks and you will be back to normal.
Jai/ Mayyon / Doctor, I don’t know how to thank you.
Doctor I/ Sathya / Thank Swami, my boy. He is the real healer and real protector of all.
