Position:INTERIM YOUTH ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR

Position Summary: The Interim youthengagementcoordinator is a one-year term position filling in for a maternity leave. In an interim role, the coordinator is responsible for maintaining and continuing the work of youth engagement at Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

Working closely with the public engagement coordinator and other staff, the interim youth engagement coordinator will initiate a program of engagement andeducational activitiesto engage younger people in the work of ending hunger. The coordinator will focus their attention on resourcing educators who work with children, youth and young adults. The coordinator is supervised by the director of resources andpublic engagement.

This position is based in Winnipeg. Occasional domestic and limited international travel will be required.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. International Food Security Learning Tour- Initiate and manage all aspects of the 2016young adult/educators learning tour to an international destination. This will include:
  2. Planning the tour and connecting with in-country hosts
  3. Promoting the tour to member churches and agencies, schools
  4. Selecting participants
  5. Planning and participating in an orientation
  6. Accompanying the tour
  7. Planning and conducting a debriefing process with tour participants
  1. EducationalResources - Gather and create resources for educators to engage children, youth and young adultson hunger issues and the work of the Foodgrains Bank, including:
  2. Creating children’s stories and other materials for children
  3. Gatheringand creating resources for Sunday school teachers and other church youth engagers
  4. Creating lesson plans that could be used by teachers to fulfill school curriculum requirements for both religious and secular environments
  1. Outreach and Engagement – Seek and develop opportunities to connect with teachers, youth leaders and other youth engagers, including:
  2. Coordinating kiosks and presentations at various networking events (i.e. teachers’ conferences, youth leaders’ gatherings)
  3. Further developingthe organizational Pinterest account as a means to highlight our educational and worship resources
  4. Connecting with educational bloggers, homeschool networks, public and private schools systems and youth ministry teams across Canada
  5. Writingthe Educators’ Network e-newsletter, and highlighting educational resources and initiatives in other corporate communications
  6. Facilitating the participation of youth and young adults in the Good Soil advocacy postcard campaign
  7. Planning and implementing the participation of youth in Hunger on the Hill, an excursion to Ottawa for supporters
  8. Maintaining contact with previous tour participants
  9. Maintaining contact with key youth engagers in our network
  1. Networking– Represent and promote the Foodgrains Bank in youth networks, including:
  2. Collaborating with and responding to member churches and agencies to support their youth engagement programs
  3. Participating in youth-related events on behalf of the Foodgrains Bank
  1. Other
  2. Participate in the Public Engagement Team and provide support to the broader activities of the team
  3. Participate in Resources and Public Engagement team meetings and contribute to the broader work of the department
  4. Participate in Food Justice Team meetings and assist with advocacy programs and initiatives
  5. Other tasks as assigned by the director of resources and public engagement

Qualifications:

Required

  • Knowledge of food security issues and international relief and development
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Able to build positive relationships with and engage a broad range of people
  • Experience and skill in a variety of group and workshop facilitation styles
  • Creativity
  • English language fluency
  • Skilled in using various communications and social media (blogs, websites, Facebook, etc.)
  • Identify with and support the underlying mission and Christian dimension of the Foodgrains Bank and be an active member of a Christian church community
  • Available for domestic and international travel

Preferred

  • Familiarity with Foodgrains Bank and its Canadian support network
  • Degree in Social Sciences, Education, or Science
  • Understanding of learning and educational principles as evidenced by experience in public engagementorworking in formal education or non-formal education
  • Experience leading or facilitating group travel (in particular to the developing world) or work/ travel in the developing world
  • Experience in or understanding of advocacy work
  • Fluency in French or Spanish
