  1. WELCOME AND APOLOGIES

  • JWopened the meeting at 9.10amand welcomed all those in attendance.
  • Everyone present introduced themselves and detailed their role and experience with the Belmont / South Perth / Victoria Park CAN
/ Noted.
  1. STANDING ITEMS AND UPDATES

Item / Action
2.1 /
  • JW explained a purposefully short agenda
/ Noted.
2.2 / Priority Area Discussion
  • Discussions the CAN’s history and the three key priority areas that were previously agreed as focus areas which were determined when Ross led the CAN concept throughout the SE corridor.
  • HW detailed a funding extension of $100k for next 12 months.
The concept of feeding information to Director General / Ministerial level was discussed at length. Leading to further discussion on the purpose of the CAN (strategic vs operational).
Service providers and the three Councils were highlighted in the discussion, focussing on harnessing combined efforts to ensure the CAN produces something tangible over the next six months.
JW suggested that timeframes to begin work on a target area(s) could be circulated ‘out of session’ (via email) when the minutes are circulated.
The group focussed heavily on agreeing on priority areas, which were determined to be:
  • Increased education about healthy and respectful relationships links to (links to V4);
  • Address underlying causes of substance abuse (links to DA1);
  • Mentoring Programs for young males;
  • Alternative pathways to education (links to Edu3).
It should be noted that the first two priority areas are directly from the “Youth Voices on Youth Issues” report from the 2015 Speak out for Change Summit. The latter two are not taken directly from the document but there is alignment (the latter two were determined based on past CAN action and topics of priority during the meeting). JW has linked the final priority area to the Youth Recommendations as closely as possible in brackets / bold above. Linking the third priority area should be considered by the group. / Noted.
  1. GENERAL BUSINESS

Item / Action
3.1 / Meeting Frequency
ALL – the group determined that in the short term they would meet on a monthly basis to maintain momentum. Mon – Wed are days most preferable to the majority of members.
The group agreed that following circulation of the minutes, members would consider ‘projects’ aligning to the identified priority areas and send to JW for collation prior to the next meeting.
JW Closed the meeting by confirming the group make-up would likely stay the same, with only a few additional persons attending in the future, whom on this occasion were apologies.
Meeting closed at 10.30am. / Noted.
