YOUTH ACCESS PROGRAMME: INTRODUCTION TO CONSERVATION &
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION BRIDGING COURSE

The introduction to Conservation & Environmental Education bridging course is aimed at school leavers who are interested in a career in Environmental Education and/or Nature Conservation. This course focuses on exposing the learner to theory and practical application of environmental education and also the life of a field ranger in a conservation area. Learners willundergo a contact training session at the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) for 4 months and are thenwork-placed with host conservation organisations (nature reserves in their countries of origin) for 2 months for post-training learner experiential learning in order to get a real understanding of an entry level career in nature conservation and environmental education.

The modules which are covered include:Environmental Education (NQF Level 5); Field Ranger-Unarmed (NQF level 2), Environmental Leadership Skills, First Aid Level1 and Orientation to Reptiles. Generic Skills needed for application of the above modules are integrated into the training and assessment.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must have knowledge, comprehension and application of English and natural sciencesat matric or at‘O level’. We require that you attach a certified copy of the national certificate received when completing high schooli.e. (Matriculation certificate or an O level certificate or a school leaver’s certificate.)
  • Applicants (male and female) must be between the agesof 18 - 26 years old.
  • The accompanying application form must be completed in full. Candidates who are unable to complete the application form in full will be considered as unsuitable for the course, and they will not be selected as a consequence. Note that you may use a separate page for motivation if the space provided on the form is not enough.
  • Applicants must be physically fit and capable of participating in field exercises in rugged and remote areas, and at times under extreme conditions. They must have average or above average vision and hearing abilities.
  • A medical certificate of health signed by a registered professional medical doctor must be included.
  • A certified copy of an Identification Document and or Passportmust be included
  • Candidates that have participated in Eco-Schools, environmental or conservation programmes/projects will have an added advantage.
  • Only short listed candidates will be contacted for interviews
  • Limited bursaries will be awarded to successful candidates

SPECIFIC CONDITIONS

  • Applicants will be responsible for securing their own medical cover for their period of study at the College.
  • Course fees include the costs for accommodation, meals, uniform and training at the College. These course fees are covered by the bursary the learner is applying for.
  • Personal Costs include incidental and personal expenses such as refreshments, telephones, faxes, photocopying, writing pads, pens, pencils, printing, clip-board paper, toiletries (towels and soap etc), medical treatment, transport to and from the College, and any other costs which students may incur individually. The College is not responsible for these incidental costs incurred by students. No credit or accounts will be available. All purchases by students at the College will be strictly on a cash basis.
