House Foods America Company Backgrounder

House Foods America Corporation (HFAC) is a fully-owned subsidiary of the House Foods Corporation (HFC), one of Japan’s oldest and largest food manufacturers. Established in 1913 in Osaka, HFC is renowned for its curry brands as well as a line of spice products.

In 1981, HFC opened its first U.S. branch, headquartered in Los Angeles with the goal of introducing American foodies to Japanese-style curry. Shortly thereafter, in 1983, HFC launched itspremier tofu business through a partnership with Hinoichi Tofu, one of the most respected tofu brands in the U.S. AS a result, HFAC was established in Los Angeles, California in 1993.

In 1997, HFAC moved its tofu manufacturing to a state-of-the-art facility in Garden Grove, California. HFAC’s most recent milestone is the 2006 opening of a tofu manufacturing plant in Somerset, New Jersey. The two HFAC plants in California and New Jersey have the combined manufacturing capacity of 350,000 pieces of tofu per day.

HFAC today is comprised of three operations: manufacturing and sales of tofu and tofu-related products; importing of HFC’s products; and management of Curry House chain of restaurants.

The HFAC Tofu line, which includes House Premium Tofu, Organic Tofu, and Tofu Steak, is the company’s flagship product offering. One of HFAC’s most innovative products is Tofu Shirataki noodle, which is made from puréedtofu and a root of Konjac, a member of Asian yam family. The acclaimed gluten-free pasta alternative is vegan, low in calories and carbs, and comes in three shapes: Angel Hair, Spaghetti, and Fettuccine.
