Assignment: Scientist use their inquiry skills to solve problems. You will use your inquiry skills to design the best paper airplane. You and your team of engineers will use your Qualitative and Quantitative Observations and Inferences to design the best plane. At the end of this assignment we will take the best design and have a race to determine which group has the best engineering skills.

Your Grade: There will be a group grade and an individual grade for this assignment.

  • Group Grade: Will be based on cooperation as a group and completion of group tasks and personal competencies:

P02. / Planning and Responsibility: Demonstrate ability to create and execute effective plan and take responsibility for outcomes.
P06. / Cooperation: Interact with others in ways that are responsive, effective and demonstrate respect for others’ ideas, opinions, and contributions.
  • Individual Grade:Will be based on completion of individual assignments and science compentencies:

S01. / Scientific Investigation: Complete projects that demonstrate understanding of different kinds of scientific investigation, controlled experiment, fieldwork, experimental design, and secondary research.
S02. / Scientific Tools: Demonstrate appropriate use of tools and techniques to father, analyze and interpret data.
S04. / Scientific Communication: Demonstrate effective scientific communication.

THIS IS AN ONGOING ASSIGNMENT THEREFORE YOUR DAILY ATTENDANCE IS A KEY PART OF YOUR GRADE!

Task 1: Determine the best paper plane design for our class race. (10-12 min)

  • Questions to address (recorder should record responses):
  • What makes a good paper plane?
  • What are some factors that are needed to make that good paper plane? (i.e. paper type, design, ect)
  • What materials will be needed?
  • If your group’s plane is the best and someone else wants to duplicate your design, what will your group need to do to make sure anybody else can duplicate your design and results?
  • How can we be sure your group’s plane is the best?
  • Each group will:
  • Choose a group name
  • Choose group roles- Engineer, Recorder, and Spokesperson
  • Engineer- each group member will assist in the design process but the engineer is the one who is in charge of the plane design (the one with the best paper plane skills of the group)
  • Recorder- each group member will be documenting information but the recorder’s information need to be the most accurate and will represent the group when it’s time to be handed in or presented (the 2 people with the best typing skills)
  • Spokesperson- each group member will have to answer questions but the spokesperson will be the main presenter for the group
  • State an inference on what would make the best plane based on past experience or knowledge

Task 2: Research paper plane designs using Determine if your group would like a different design based on observing the planes on the site. Whatever design you choose the recorders should write why your group thinks that is the best design. Once the design is chosen the spokesperson needs to inform Mr. Andrews about the materials needed for your group’s plane. (20-25 min)

  • Engineer with assistance from the rest of the group construct your groups plane.
  • Recorders ensure your process can be duplicated
  • Spokesperson be sure you can describe the whole process.
