Welcome to Hope House Vacation Centre

Parents and carers that have children with Autism and Learning difficulties may need a break from the constant round-the-clock care they provide for their child. Also, the child might want to experience new activities that are just not possible at home. We at Hope House Vacation Centre provide the chance for these breaks and activities to happen.

This Child and Young person’s guide may be helpful to you and your family if you decide to come and stay with us.

Children’s Guide

Our aim

Our aim is for the parents and carers to get the breaks they deserve, with confidence that their child is having a fun filled stay with us and knowing that their child is being cared for in a safe and secure environment with experienced caring staff.

We also want the children to access all opportunities possible, have fun, learn new skills and further refine existing skills whilst building positive relationships with staff and peers at the centre.

Once you have read this guide and have any questions or worries, just ask us. We are here to help.

Michael McCarthy

Registered Manager.

Here at the Vacation Centre, we expect everyone staying here to consider others as well as themselves.

We do our best to help the children and Young people staying here to feel safe, secure, cared for and wanted. Our staff will be good role models and set good examples to the children by showing mutual respect to each other

Where Are We?

The Vacation Centre is based in Balderton / Nottinghamshire. There is a historical market town less than a mile away with doctor’s surgeries, hospital, cinema, boat trips, sports centre and many more local attractions.

If you need any help with homework, there will be a quiet space provided and staff will help where they can to help you complete it. The site has a strict no smoking policy.

Staff Team

The Vacation Centre has a dedicated team who are all fully DBS checked. They have a varied range of skills and training, and all are experienced in working with children and young people with Autism and learning difficulties. All those working at the Vacation Centre believe that the children staying with us should be treated with respect and dignity, and be given all possible opportunities to live a full and varied life with choices.

Meal times

We will always try and eat at the dining table where possible. Meals will be a set times but with some flexibility. We will already have a meal plan ready for each child, that would have been discussed with the child and parents and carers before their stay. Each meal plan will meet the needs of each individual, whether it’s for religious, cultural, health reasons or just personal preference. We offer Halal, Gluten free and additive free diets. We will always promote healthy eating at the Vacation centre.

Helping to run the centre

As well as all the fun and games that your child will have at the Vacation Centre we will teach them domestic skills and will put tasks such as cooking, cleaning and washing into their timetable. We believe that such skills are valuable to the children and their parents and carers.

Your Bedroom

You will have your own bedroom. You can bring some personal belongings from home i.e. Photographs, Teddies, Toys (sensory), I-pad, Mp3 player to help you settle at the Vacation Centre. Don’t forget your favourite toothbrush and other toiletries to keep safe in your room. There will be a lock on your door that you can lock from the inside. Staff will have a key to this lock and will only enter if they feel your health and safety are at risk. Bedtimes will depend on the age of the child and will be arranged before their stay.

Pocket Money

You may want to bring your own pocket money to spend when out on activities or would like to buy a magazine or comic to read/have read to you whilst relaxing at the centre. We will store your money in our safe until you would like to spend it.

On site Activities

The children will be able to access our animal unit. They can hold, stroke and pet them or even work with the animals, helping to feed, groom and clean them.

Some of our animals

There is a Hot tub in the summer house in the grounds of the vacation centre. We have an activity room with lots of games, toys, jigsaws, air hockey table and football table. Our befriending clubs are also on site and they will have access to these, making new friends or playing individual games. Activities and approaches to the children accessing these services are tailored to individual needs and preferences. Activities are planned both within the community and on site, having regard to the age and interests of the child.

We have an RDA centre if your child would like to learn how to ride on one of our gentle friendly horses.

Off-site Activities

Offsite activities will include activities such as cinema trips, boat trips, mountain biking, woodland walks, local parks, trampoline parks, dog walking, shopping, crazy golf, seaside trips and many more. We will ask the Children what activities they enjoy or would like to try before their stay with us to make sure they have the best possible experience.

Can you make a complaint?

If you are not satisfied with the level of care or service, you receive at the Vacation Centre or have any other worries, the most effective way to try and resolve these would be to talk to staff or management first. If the advice or response your given isn’t enough then you can follow our complaints policy and procedures which will be available to read before and whilst you’re staying with us.
