Application Instructions

Your application packet must include:

  1. A resumé,
  2. An unofficial transcript,
  3. A short essay, maximum 500 words, describing why you would like to work as a Resident next semester (submit a separate essay for each Residency for which you are applying), and
  4. A completed Legal Residency Application.

Specific Instructions for submitting your application packet:

  1. Each document must be submitted in PDF format.
  2. Each document must be labeled with your last name followed by the name of the document. For example “Smith_resume”, “Smith_application”.
  3. Email all documents in one email to Sue McBrayer at .
  4. The subject line of your email should be your name.
  5. All submissions must be received by: Friday, October 14, 2016.

General Information (please use as much space as needed to complete the questions.)

  1. Are there any classes required for graduation that you have not yet taken? If so, list the classes.
  2. How many credits will you need in spring semester in order to graduate?
  3. What is your preferred number of credits for the Residency Placement (8-13)?
  4. List any days and times, Monday-Friday – 9:00am-5:00pm, that you would not be able to work at a Residency Placement.
  5. List externships, clinics, or other substantial legal work experience (including summer associate positions) that you have had.

Section A: Criminal Law Residency

  1. Have you taken Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Evidence? If not, have you had work experience that has exposed you to these doctrinal areas?
  2. Would you prefer prosecution work or defense work, or are you open to either?
  3. We are likely to have placements in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Hudson, WI. Please list your preference, and also list any of these that you would not be able to accept.

Section B: Family Law Residency

  1. Have you taken Family Law or courses on family mediation, domestic violence, child protection, or poverty law? If not, have you had work experience that has exposed you to these doctrinal areas?
  2. Please indicate any experience you have working with poor or underserved populations.
  3. We are likely to have placements in Minneapolis, St. Cloud, Chaska, and Hastings. Please list your location preference and any locations you would not be able to accept.

Section C: Health Law Residency

1. Please list all Health Law classes that you have taken.

2. Please identify any other education relating to either Health Law or health care.

3. Please identify any work experience that has exposed you to Health Law.

4. Please identify any work experience in health care (as distinct from Health Law).

5. Please rank your preferred work setting among law firm, hospital, device company, and government.
6. We are likely to have placements in Minneapolis, St. Paul, the outer Metro suburbs, and Rochester. Please list your preference, and also list any of these that you would not be able to accept.
