Young Men Must Register With Selective Service

(NAPSA)—There’s good newsfor young men living in the UnitedStates. It’s easier than ever to registerwith the Selective ServiceSystem. This is important sinceregistration is required by law.

It’s The Law

The law requires virtually allmale U.S. citizens and immigrantsto register with the Selective

Service System. To be in fullcompliance with the law, menturning 18 are required to registerduring the period of time beginning30 days before until 30 daysafter their 18th birthday—a 60-day window.

This applies regardless of wherethey live. It also applies to maleimmigrants residing in the U.S. nomatter their immigration status.

Benefits

Men who have registered remain eligible for federal studentaid, most federal jobs and federaljob training. Male noncitizens livingin the U.S. who are 18 through25 must register to remain eligiblefor citizenship. Many states andterritories require registration fora driver’s license.

Early Submission

It is now possible for a man tosubmit registration informationearly, as long as he is at least 17years and 3 months old.

Where And How To Register

  • Register Online. Go to and click on the registrationicon. It only takes aminute to complete the registration.When you submit your information,you get a registrationnumber instantly.
  • At the post office. SelectiveService “mailback” registrationforms are available at any U.S.Postal Service facility. Men livingoverseas may register at any U.S.embassy or consular office.
  • By mail. A young man mayalso register by filling out aReminder Mailback Card. SelectiveService sends this card tomany young men around the timethey turn 18. Mailback cards arealso available at some post offices.
  • The federal student aidform. Another way a young mancan register is to check a box onthe application form for FreeApplication for Federal StudentAid (FAFSA form). Simply check“Yes” on Box No. 29 of that formand the Department of Educationwill furnish Selective Servicewith the information to registerthe man.
  • At school. Most of the highschools in the nation have a staffmember or teacher appointed as a Selective Service Registrar. Theseindividuals help register youngmen.

Penalties For Not Complying

Those who don’t comply facefines of up to $250,000, a prisonsentence of up to five years orboth. Plus, they are ineligible forstudent financial aid and jobtraining programs.
