Duration:Fixed term 12 month contract with possibility to extend based on success

Background:

World Jewish Relief is the UK Jewish community’s leading international humanitarian agency. We tackle Jewish poverty and reach beyond our community. We create opportunities for those out of work to become self-reliant; we bring dignity to the elderly and we respond to international disasters.

Purpose:

To achieve an ambitious Corporate Strategy, World Jewish Relief recognises the need to grow its income; the Programme Development Manager will play a vital role in achieving this by developing the programme portfolio and expanding our access to Government and institutional donor agencies and high value Foundations. The role will be responsible for identifying and securing new significant funding opportunities, working collaboratively or in new alliances and consortia with partners and working closely with our Programmes team to ensure all operations meet our exacting standards. The role will particularly focus on growingthe funding for our expanding humanitarian portfolio which currently includes programmes in Nepal, Ukraine and responding to the Refugee Crisis.

The ideal candidate will have experience of engaging with and mobilising funds from institutional government donors, such as DFID, and UN agencies, and/or major trusts and foundations and be familiar with the international development/humanitarian sector. They will have the confidence and ability to open doors, represent World Jewish Relief to external audiences and be politically astute and capable of navigating their way through the complexity of international humanitarian finance.

Outstanding communication skills are essential to ensure new relationships with funders and partner agencies are built. This is a great opportunity for someone who is a natural self-starter with excellent analytical, organisational and communicationcapabilities.

Specific Responsibilities:

Programme Funding Development

  • Lead on building a new, thoughtful and engaging relationship with key components of DFID and EU funding bodies.
  • Seek to access a minimum of £150,000 income within twelve months.
  • Research, identify and drive approaches to alternative institutional funding opportunities for World Jewish Relief
  • Work closely with the Programmes Team and overseas partners to identify, design and plan new programme initiatives and opportunities leading to pitching them to institutional funding agencies in accordance with funder guidelines
  • Focus initially on the response to the refugee crisis and other humanitarian work, including Nepal prior to working up multi-year proposals for our core work in the former Soviet Union.
  • Work collaboratively with the Programmes, Philanthropy and Finance teams to ensure programmes would be able to meet donor requirements and to excellent quality.
  • Keep up to date with institutional donors trends, policies, application and reporting and compliance processes
  • Work closely with the programmes team and other related functions to ensure understanding of any implications, risks and opportunities of institutional funding applications/awards.

Grant Management

  • Grant manage key institutional awards, including delivering all financial and technical reporting meet set deadlines.
  • Work with the Programmes Team to develop and ensure monitoring and evaluation systems and procedures for awarded grants.
  • Lead on institutional donor grant agreement/contract negotiations and compliance and act as the key point of contact throughout the life of the contract. Ensuring all requests or questions are responded to in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all relevant team members are fully briefed on the terms and conditions of donor grant agreements/contracts, including key deadlines to ensure all stakeholders are able to meet and adhere to donor rules and regulations.
  • Manage due diligence processes, facilitate donor audits and coordinate with the Programmes Team on external evaluations.
  • Utilising our CRM system, Raiser’s Edge, for maintaining all contacts, information and deadlines for each grant award and new fundraising opportunity
  • Review feedback from donors and monitor fundraising successes and failures to support future

Networking and Representation

  • Represent World Jewish Relief at networks, events and forums relevant to institutional funding and funders.
  • Actively pursue and build new donor relationships, and then account manage these relationships to identify and grow funding partnerships and to develop effective working relationship with key donors.
  • Build relationships and work with other agencies for consortia applications.
  • Support other areas of fundraising (i.e. trusts & foundations, major donors, partners) as required in the development of effective fundraising proposals.

Other

  • The role will require potentially upwards of 55 days international travel during the 12 month period.

Skills / Status Required
QUALIFICATIONS /
  • Degree level or equivalent in an appropriate subject.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND APTITUDE /
  • Experience of project design, fundraising and proposal writing from institutions and foundations desirable;
  • Experience of liaison and representation with Government departments and funding agencies.
  • Outstanding communication skills (written and oral);
  • Ability to identify and critically review opportunities for funding and collaboration, with a view to continuously develop and identify new innovative ideas;
  • Ability to manage multiple work streams in an organised manner, ensuring that key deliverables are met on time;
  • Commitment to accuracy, attention to detail and follow-through;
  • Demonstrable skills in financial management and budget preparation
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with colleagues and our global partners to extract and consolidate relevant information;
  • Ability to work productively in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and frequent interruptions;
  • Excellent analytical and research skills and ability to learn quickly;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and ability to work with overseas partners with varying levels of English

Normal Hours of Work:

Normal hours of work are 9:00 am to 5.30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9.00 am to 2.00 p.m. on Friday.
