AR 306 PAINTING 1cole 4926

You will complete a number of assignments in and out of class. Please be prepared to work diligently throughout the semester. Painting should be an enjoyable activity, but as true artists you will have to be dedicated and disciplined. I want plenty of experimentation, which also means that some things will not work out as planned. Be prepared to think on many different levels and be prepared for a few failures. Progress follows tenacity.

There will be critiques every week. Some will be informal, simply for your benefit, if you have questions about elements in your painting. Some will be more formal. All will be different.

PAINTING #1:This will be a black and white painting on a gessoed piece of canvas or canvasboard no smaller than 18"x24". It will involve a simple still life consisting of BLACK AND WHITE OBJECTS (cone, cylinder, sphere, cube, and biomorphic ) against a gray cloth backdrop. You and your classmates will be responsible for coordinating this still life. The use of light and shadows is key. Practice different brushwork on different objects.

PAINTING #2:With a shoebox or similar box (proportional to the same as your canvas) again on a gessoed piece of canvas no smaller that 18"x24". Any proportion of rectangle prepare a collage, cut-outs consisting of magazine photos with 2 or 3 3-D objects on top of collage.

The primary objective is to match colors and perceive light and shadows. Arrange your collage according to movement and rhythm.

PAINTING #3:Landscape using a very bizarre technique.

PAINTING #4:Self-portrait. Lifesize head or head and bust. Realistic colors and proper proportions. Using a mirror-not from a photograph. Proportions will be discussed and will proper palette.

PAINTING #5:Peer assignment. Through class discussion, the class will decide structure, format and size, and suitable subject matter. This is in an effort to get you to experiment and work a little differently. For example if you are working small and very controlled, an effort may be to get you to work very large and looser.

A spinoff from your research (art magazines, books, slides, etc,)

PAINTING #6:Figure. Working with model in class. Large scale.

PAINTING #7:Final project OPEN
