Much of Mary’s desperation is shown by her distressed mannerisms throughout the story. Even though it has been years since she last saw Bill, Mary displays a longing for her old life with him. When her and Bill first meet again in the park “She lifted her face as though wanting a kiss, but he held out his hand” (Hughes 1). The fact that Mary immediately is drawn back to a time when she wants to kiss Bill shows that she is not over him. Moreover, his immediate, distant nature toward her shows that she is more affected by the situation than Bill is. Even after they continue to talk and Mary realizes they have no future because Bill is now happy, Mary still seems eager to hold onto the moment they have. With the realization that they were being pulled apart again, Mary “was experiencing a flood of emotions that had not been previously addressed or released” (Smithson 13). Mary had waited this long to see Bill and had so many emotions bottled up that she was desperate to hold on to the moment. Regardless that Mary had her own family, she could not get over what she lost years ago with Bill. In addition, Mary’s struggle to say goodbye shows how much she is clinging to Bill or the memory of what they had. According to Robson, “the distance that Bill places between him and Mary make Mary more desperate, and in turn leaves her unable to communicate with Bill” (4). Although Mary doesn’t want to continue her life without Bill, she is being forced to leave him. Furthermore, Bill’s rejection of Mary’s efforts adds to her inability to effectively communicate any other feelings. As Mary franticly continues to hold onto the idea of Bill, it becomes clearer how much her past decision has affected her current state of mind.
