Digital Photography Final Exam

You have one full class period to complete this

Please type your responses in this document with a 12 pt. different colored font and print it to the 4700 printer, in room 208. Be sure to put your name at the top. Single-spacing is fine. Please respond in paragraph form and check spelling!

PART 1: Please open an image from either your PORTRAIT or PHOTO ESSAY assignments and copy and paste a small copy of it into this document and respond to the following (must be a JPEG - if the photo is saved as a PHOTOSHOP document (PSD file) you must open it in Photoshop, do a file save as and save it as a JPEG before you can insert it into Word):

1.  DESCRIBE

In this step you are describing everything you see in your image. This is a simple account of what is there. In other words, you are making a list – a visual inventory. Imagine you are describing the photograph to someone who is blindfolded. How could you describe the picture so the person could accurately see it in their mind? Be very descriptive – describe what you see: colors, textures, how things overlap, what is emphasized, barely visible, etc. Don’t read any meaning into what you see – not yet!

1.  ANALYZE

During this step you are focusing on describing the relationship among the things that were listed earlier. Simply put, how did you get the viewer (me) to look at everything in the picture plane? Analyze what you see using the ELEMENTS OF ART and PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN. (See below) Refer to at least 2 elements and 2 principles and explain how they are used. (For one example: “The artist emphasized the color of the exit sign by increasing the saturation of the red and placing it on the top layer” (emphasis & color).

2.  INTERPRET the meaning your photograph as though you are an art critic piecing together the visual elements like clues. Even if you did not start out with a meaning, what meaning did you end up with? Back up your statements by referring to specific images in the photograph.

3.  JUDGE the overall aesthetic appeal of the image. Are you satisfied with the final product? What could you have done differently to change the results? Come up with at least one alternative – the answer “I was satisfied with the results is NOT sufficient.”

1.  Explain what you have learned about using aperture (f-stop), shutter speed, and ISO sensitivity to control light in a photograph. You can describe the settings you used when creating this image. Don’t just list the settings, please describe why these settings were important when setting up your shot.
