Painting Project

You have been commissioned to paint the interior walls of room 910.

All wall space not covered by a white board or bulletin board needs to be painted.

The front wall will be painted Yellow.

The back wall and side walls will be painted Swiss Coffee.

All of the wood in the room will be painted White (wainscot, door frames, and window frames)

We are not painting the ceiling or floor.

In class today you are expected to finish Step 1. Your homework is to finish Steps 2-3. By Monday,

October 25th, you are expected to complete Step 4 (and Step 5, if you choose).

*Step 1: Calculate the surface area of the things that will be painted for each color. (15 points)

*Step 2: Determine how much paint will be needed for each color. (10 points)

*Step 3: Use the advertisement below to calculate the total cost of the project, keeping in mind that paint can only be purchased by the gallon. (10 points)

*Step 4: Write a thorough invoice/bill for your customer detailing the total surface area for each color, the amount of paint necessary to cover that surface area, the total cost of paint for each color, and the total cost of the job. A brief template is shown at the end of this page. Please keep in mind that you are a “real” contractor bidding on a “real” painting job, so make your invoice professional and detailed! (15 points)

*Step 5 (bonus up to 10 points): Carpet for the room is selling at $11.89 per square yard (note: 3 feet = 1 yard). Add to your invoice the total area of the carpet space and the total cost of carpet for the room for a re-carpeting job.

(see back of this sheet)

Some ideas to think about BEFORE you get started:

·  Would it be easier to measure the total area of each wall and then subtract parts you don’t need, or to measure each section of the wall and then add the individual totals?

·  Will the length and width of the walls across from each other be the same? Will the height of every wall in the room be the same?

·  If you measure the wall dimensions in inches and wish to convert to feet, how will you do this? If you get the inches squared and need to convert it to feet squared, how can you convert your amounts? (A good idea is to use a small measure you know, for example, 1 ft x 1 ft, which is 12 inches x 12 inches. Then think about the square areas feet versus inches.)

·  Designate a member of your group for each wall. He/she may work with members of other groups working on measuring the same wall. You WILL NOT FINISH if your group tries to measure all four walls alone. If you do not finish your measurements, you will need to come in at tutorial or during before school help times to do so.
