York Small Boats Head

The York Small Boats Head event is taking place on the 19th November, this is not only one of the biggest rowing events in terms of numbers participating, but also brings a large revenue to the club. As with all events, the success of YSBH is down to the many volunteers to help run, organise, time, marshal, feed, support the crews competing, etc. – if you have not done so already, please, please do contact the Regatta Secretary, Anne Homa, to volunteer and help support this great event and the Club. Let’s hope the sun will be shining, the club will be open all day and we expect many visiting clubs so it should be a busy day of racing!

Club Roof and Development

The work on the club roof has now been completed and you may have noticed the scaffolding has already come down, it was noted that approximately 2 ton of moss was removed from the roof as part of the refurbishment work!

YCRC recently attended a meeting with York City Council to discuss the development of the Boathouse. The meeting was very encouraging and the club has been made aware of new opportunities for our development as a result of the planned Holgate Tear Drop site development. The Management Committee has approved the forming of this year’s Development Committee being led by Phil Press; the committee are currently reviewing options available to the development. More news to follow.

Constantine

The official boat naming ceremony of ’Constantine The Great’, the Filippi 8+ purchased last year, will be taking place outside of The Minster by the statue of the emperor himself on Saturday the 18th November, 10.15-10.30. The boat naming ceremony will be attended by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.

This is a huge opportunity to promote the club in and around York and the club is encouraging as many of you all as possible to attend, if you are free Saturday it would be great to see you there!

As you could imagine there will not be a row over, but is a good opportunity to get the creases and/or cobwebs off your club jackets before the annual dinner….

Defibrillator

A defibrillator will soon be in place outside of the club by the boat bays. This will be available to use in an emergency for all, including the public. The box will be locked and requires a phone to call the telephone number printed on the box, revealing the combination to unlock it and access the Defibrillator in an emergency. The instructions for using the defibrillator are inside and require no specific training; it is designed for easy, straight forward use – just what you would need in an emergency.

Please note that if you do not have a mobile phone available in an emergency, there is a landline phone upstairs in the club by the notice boards outside of the bar. If you think the box has ever been tampered with in any way, please inform any member of the Committee.

Fours Head of the River

Crews from all elements of the club will be racing at the Veterans and Fullers Fours Head of the River race on the tideway, weekend of 11-12th of November. Best of luck to all those crews racing!

YCRC on Social Media

After the website revamp, you may have noticed increased activity on the YCRC social media accounts - this is part of an effort to share and showcase the efforts and achievements of our members, both within the club and to the outside world. We're also testing out live tweeting from regattas and heads - watch this space!

Please do follow our 'York City Rowing Club' page on Facebook, and our Twitter account @ycrc for updates on racing, club activities and more. We also now have an Instagram account at @YorkCityRowingClub sharing pictures of training, racing and the many photogenic moods of the River Ouse...

A gentle reminder - whilst we definitely encourage members to engage with club accounts on social media, remember that posts regarding the club and its activities in any public forum (both official and unofficial groups) reflect on YCRC - keep it clean, friendly and think before you post!

Any queries, or particularly lovely photos you wouldn't mind going into our library of images on the website, do get in touch with Robyn at .

AGM

Thanks you to all who attended the AGM, draft minutes are available to view on the Website under the Secretary and Welfare Page.

KIT

With the start of the Head season and the welcome arrival of many new members, Liz Porte has asked me to send round a note about stock kit and second hand kit for sale.

Stock kit

Liz carries a stock of almost all sizes of lycras (£53) as these are the one essential bit of kit for anyone wanting to race. Lycras can also be bought directly from Godfrey, our club kit manufacturer, but they will be more expensive as we buy in bulk and save on delivery. Liz also carries a stock of YCRC ties - £15.

Other club kit

Liz arranges a kit buying window at least once a year, more often if there are enough people who want kit. During this time, all individual orders will be treated as one single order so that everyone will get any bulk discounts and save on delivery as it is all sent to one address. The last such window was in September, so if you want to get some kit, let Liz know and as soon as there is enough interest, she will open up another window.

It is always possible to buy kit directly from Godfrey – For some items, particularly splash tops and gilets, it is not much more expensive to buy on a one off basis, you will just pay more for delivery. For other items – lycras, tech tops, leggings – it is a lot more expensive to buy one off items.

Donated kit

The following items have been donated to the club and are available in return for a donation to the Club Boathouse fund. If you would like any of them, contact Liz on the email address at the end of this note. In case you are wondering, the reason for requesting a donation is that if you are a UK taxpayer, we can claim tax relief on it.

Womens JL lycra small, good condition £10

Womens Godfrey lycra medium, good condition £10

Men’s Powerhouse lycra medium (but on the small side), good condition £10

Brand new Crewroom YCRC tracksuit bottoms, half price £22.

If there are any bits of rowing kit lurking at the back of your wardrobe that you no longer want, please do let Liz know. Rowers are always on the lookout for a kit bargain!

If you want any of these items or if you have any kit queries, just drop Liz an email .

And final, welcome to our new club members:

Poppy Priestly – Junior Squad

Benjamin Allison – Junior Squad

Benjamin Bollans

Club Secretary
