I representedBANCC at the 9th Annual Spring Meeting on Cardiovascular Nursing of the European Cardiovascular Society Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions (ESC CCNAP) and a short report will follow. And finally, this is my last newsletter to you as president. Two years have passed very quickly indeed and I pass the responsibility on to my successor Jayne Mudd, who was elected by you to president elect two years ago. Jayne has valuable experience of national group working through HRUK and the Arrhythmia Alliance, besides close links with the BHF and DH. I know that BANCC will be in very capable hands.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow council members who have worked so hard to keep moving BANCC forward, always trying to present good value for your membership fee. Many thanks team!
Don’t forget to contribute to make this Association what you want it to be, keep telling your colleagues of the benefits of joining and keep letting us know how we’re doing.
I look forward to seeing you at BCS. Thank you for your support and encouragement.
Best wishes,
Jenny Tagney

In January, 13 cardiac nurses were successful in gaining places on the BANCC/BHF acute cardiac course at the University of Salford. As you will recall, a key criteria for successful application is membership of BANCC. They have all received BHF funding and are progressing well on the course.
They are currently in their 12th week and have so far studied subjects such as A&P, electrocardiography, resuscitation and drug therapy. Over the next few weeks they will be grappling with topics such as interventional cardiology and end of life care.
The students have stated that they are thoroughly enjoying the course but have realised just how much there is to learn. It is the ultimate aim of any course to ensure that the students are being stretched but also they are enjoying their studying. We hope to feature a regular report from course candidates in future newsletters.

Module Leader, Lecturer in Cardiac Nursing - School of Nursing, University of Salford
We were sorry to hear of the death of Mary Morpeth on 14th February, from cardiovascular disease and would like to pass on our condolences to her sister. At her sister’s passing, Miss E. Morpeth chose to raise some money for BANCC and we are very pleased to have received donations raised by her former colleagues, friends and family. I am particularly pleased that she has done so much to support our organisation, at such a difficult time.
Mary Morpeth trained at ShotleyBridgeHospital in Co. Durham, where she spent her last working years as a Nursing Officer. Following her retirement she continued to live in a small village, where the local community used her considerable skills as a nurse to dress cuts and bruises. She would offer her help or services night or day.
I am sure she will be sorely missed by her former colleagues, who flew the flag at half mast at ShotleyBridgeHospital in memory of her life, and in her honour. I am sure she will also be missed by her friends and family. Our heartfelt thanks and condolences to her sister, Miss Morpeth, for her support at this difficult time. Miss Morpeth sent us a copy of this poem, which was read by the Rev J. Lynch at her sister’s funeral:
Mary’s Surgery – or Blanchard Community Care
There was always a welcome at her door,
For children and their grazed knees,
Mothers anxious and distressed;
Tears were dried, comfort given,
A nose was wiped, wounds were dressed,
There was always a welcome at her door.
There was always a welcome at her door,
Everyone came, they gave her their trust,
Mother to be, or with child at the breast,
The frightened, the silly, the brave,
Shepherd or cyclist, she gave of her best,
There was always a welcome at her door.
There was always a welcome at her door, feet were washed, a smile encouraged,
A brow was soothed, a worry heard,
Whether young or old, rich or poor,
What Mary had, Mary shared,
There was always a welcome at her door.

Freely available, the NHS Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS)(formerly PRODIGY) are a reliable source of evidence-based information and practical 'know how' about the common conditions managed in primary care. They are aimed at healthcare professionals working in primary and first-contact care.
CKS provides quick answers to real-life questions that arise in the consultation, linking to detailed answers that clearly outline the evidence on which they are based.
BANCC were asked to comment on the overall document as to its accuracy, evidence base and completeness. It was also to comment on scenarios given, outlining if what was being proposed in the draft was correct and in line with current evidence. If there were any omissions then suggestions were required.
There was an in depth document providing referenced, detailed information underpinning the summaries which required addressing if the respondents had time.
There were also three specific questions to be answered:
- Should all these people be referred for specialist assessment and advice on adding an Aldosterone antagonist, an AIIRA (if not already on one), or Digoxin?
- Should all people with HFPEF be referred for specialist assessment?
- The combination of a loop diuretic with a thiazide diuretic is recommended in NICE, SIGN and European guidance for people with resistant oedema. Should this combination always be given in secondary care (in an inpatient setting) or is it ever appropriate to give this combination in primary care? If so, is the advice that we give GP’s regarding dosage and monitoring sufficient?
Full answers to these questions and overall report can be seen under BANCC News:
