1 / Fire fighting equipment – inspect fire fighting equipment – ensure inspection card is legible and up to date
2 / Wheel – ensure wheel measurements form is completed and report defects – All wheel dimensions must be to AAR Standards
3 / Clean unit – clean interior and exterior of unit, trucks and fuel tank
4 / Running check – with the engine idling, perform engine and auxiliary equipment running checks (rotating, cylinder head mechanisms, water, lube oil and exhaust leaks).
5 / Fuel – inspect and ensure fuel tank, piping, pumps and the related parts are free from leaks.
6 / Handbrake – examine handbrake and stencil with the inspection date
7 / Gauges – test air brake gauges
8 / Safety valves – test main reservoir valves and installwitness wire seals
9 / Orifice test – air compressor output
10 / Fuel – inspect fuel tank fill adaptor, fuel level sight glasses, fuel gauge and associated guards and brackets. Ensure fuel tank mounting bolts are tight.
11 / Trucks – qualify wheels, trucks and associated parts (springs, wear plates, journal boxes, air ducts, hoses and pipes)

12 / Crankcase – inspect internal components of engine crankcase.
13 / Inspect pistons, rings and liners.
14 / Air box drains – clean air box drains.
15 / Filters – renew air compressor crankcase oil and filter.
16 / Governor oil – renew governor oil.
17 / Primary fuel filter - renew primary fuel filter.
18 / Secondary fuel filters – renew secondary fuel oil filters.
19 / Oil filters – renew engine lube oil filters.
20 / Air filters – renew engine air intake filters. Ensure filter housing and duct to turbocharger or blower are in good condition and filters seal properly to filter housing.
21 / Oil strainer – check for metal deposits in the bottom of lube oil strainer housing.
22 / Inspect exhaust spark arrestor device and exhaust manifold for leaks – Ensure carbon material is not building up.
23 / Oil separator – clean oil separator element.
24 / Pit D Asp – clean the main generator pit drain aspirator.
25 / Air passages – clean radiator core air passages.
26 / Seals – check condition of cab and cabinet doors, windows, floor, seats, seals and weather stripping.
27 / Cab seats – inspect all cab seats and ensure they are all in good order. Repair as require.
28 / Shutters – inspect and lubricate radiator shutters.
29 / Exhaust manifold screen – examine and clean as required (Turbo only).
30 / Exhaust manifold base bolts – re-torque
31 / Bell cartridge – clean and lubricate.
32 / Dirt collector – clean and renew filter element.
33 / Traction motor (TM) gears – lubricate TM gears, Check gear condition and lubricate to prescribe level.
34 / TM side bearings or support bearings – check for water or ice in traction motor support bearings. Drain as necessary. Lubricate to prescribed level. Ensure TM wick cover bolts are tight and locking tab in place.
35 / Journal – drain oil from journal boxes. Check for free water or ice and or metal particles. Lubricate to prescribe levels.
36 / Journal B – check journal boxes for loose or missing cover bolts. Lubricate to prescribed level.
37 / Brake gear – examine foundation brake gear.
38 / Coupler – qualify coupler and draft gear assembly (bushing, carrier, wear plate, uncoupling device).
Measure knuckle opening and coupler height.

39 / Brake – qualify truck mounted components (brake rods, levers, beam, hangers, shoes, cylinders. Ensure brake shoes are aligned with the tread wheel and properly adjusted
40 / Wheels and Trucks – visually inspect condition of wheels, trucks and associated parts.
41 / Coupler and draft gear – visually inspect coupler and draft gear assembly.
42 / Pollution tank – drain pollution control tank.
43 / Condensation – drain condensation / water from fuel tank.
44 / Safety appliances – inspect safety appliances above and below running board level.
45 / Fire and accident hazard – ensure unit is free of fire and accident hazards.
46 / Brake test – perform an operational brake test.
47 / Insulation test – perform and record insulation test.

48 / Alarm – test operation of protective alarm system.
49 / Fans – check operation and proper rotation of inertial filter blower motor (Turbo only).
50 / Fuel cut off – test operation of fuel emergency cut off switches from all stations, including throttle.

52 / Battery – check battery charging system voltage.
53 / Traction motor - clean TM creepage surfaces. Repair visual defects. Renew all brushes.
54 / Auxiliary generator – clean auxiliary generator creepage surfaces where applicable. Repair visual defects and renew brushes.
55 / Meters – test electrical meters,
56 / Heater – inspect heating and defroster system.
57 / Switch gear – qualify high voltage switch gear. (power contactor, reverser, brake transfer switch)
58 / Fuel pump – clean fuel pump DC motor creepage surfaces where applicable. Repair visual defects and renew brushes.
59 / Fans – check cooling fan fuses for open condition and visually check fan contactors / wiring for defects.
60 / Specific gravity – check specific gravity for all battery cells. Record the maximum and minimum readings.

61 / Battery – adjust level of batteries. Do not overfill. Check for visual defects (cracked, overheated, frozen cells). Ensure all cells are equipped with Hydro caps, replace as needed. Wash only if tops are covered in acid.
62 / Lights – test operation of all locomotive lights. Inspect fixtures for defects or miss alignment. Repair as required.
63 / Electrical covers – apply and secure all electrical covers and panel.
64 / Test ground protection relay. Check ground relay detection system for high voltage (power) system.

66 / Covers – apply and secure covers, panels and trap doors.
