Warm up: Circle activity
Say one word linked to fireworks e.g. hot, pop, whizz, bang, colourful etc.
Activity 1
Discuss the Firework Code. Use the http://fireworkssafety.direct.gov.uk/index.html website and watch some of the firework safety videos (located at the bottom of the page) or if you are teaching this near to 5 November click on the link in the top right to access an online film ‘A child’s eye view of fire safety’. Discuss the videos and how they link to the firework code. Make a firework safety poster or presentation and arrange to show them in assembly or organise as a competition if wished.
£££ Remind children of how to keep safe when an adult is purchasing fireworks. Don’t buy fireworks from anywhere you’re not sure about, like a van or a temporary, unlicensed market stall.
Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 – this is the British Standard that all fireworks should meet (a reputable shop will know this)
Activity 2
Use the links on http://www.saferfireworks.com/ to play some firework safety games. Ask the children what can be learnt from them.
DIFFERENTIATION
Make a short role play about firework safety. Write an acrostic safety poem about fireworks.
