Build that Quarry

You are the Public relations officer for Whitemountain - a large quarry group (part of the Lagan group) that has built and developed a series of large quarries around Belfast and Northern Ireland.

You have just decided to build a large quarry on the Galgorm road between Ballymena and Galgorm. There are many people who live in this area and they are not happy about the prospect of a large, busy quarry being built very close (within ½ mile) from their back gardens.

Your job is to make a presentation at a public meeting to the local residents. You are going to explain how the ‘Galgorm quarry’ will actually be a good thing for the area and that it will not cause any environmental problems in the area. You will make a powerpoint presentation to the local people and you will explain firstly how you will get over any problems (negative factors) and you will finish your talk by explaining what some of the good thing (positive factors) that a quarry will bring to the area.

Online Bulletin Board

There is a NEW Online Bulletin Board as part of ThinkGeography where you can go to get ideas and share web sites and information with other people in your class. You will need to log in and use an email address that you use regularly but it is easy to register and read and send your own comments! Though do be warned that you can easily be traced and all comments are moderated! Anyone who makes personal comments about another student will be booted out of the Board!

Online Information

You can get some more information online as part of ThinkGeography - you will be able to see the link to Build that Quarry on the first page at

Homeworks

You need to set homeworks for each other in the group. You need to be ready to present your presentation on the dates noted above. If you need any extra resources or any help you should email Mr Manson at

or you can use the link button on the website or the TALK area.

Final comments

The final part of this task – when the whole exercise is over – you will be asked to write a web comment on a new part of the Think Geography TALK Pages. This will be your chance to make positive comments about other presentations that you saw and to evaluate what you liked and disliked about having to complete this task.
